Atletico Madrid to beat Elche
Perhaps the most consistent team in Spanish football, Atletico don’t seem to undergo the undulating prime-to-crisis melodrama of their neighbours Real or the recurring identity crisis of Barcelona. They win less trophies, but they never stray too far from the upper reaches of La Liga.
Diego Simeone’s men haven’t finished outside the top four since 2012, winning the league twice since and reaching two Champions League finals. They haven’t pulled up any trees of late, but Atleti have more than enough to beat an Elche side mired in a relegation battle.
Real Sociedad to beat Getafe
The freshly-minted Copa del Rey winners may suffer from a bit of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ malaise after lifting their first trophy since the pandemic. Their job is to hold off Getafe, who are one point and one place behind them in La Liga.
But Sociedad are a fine side. The only teams who have beaten them in the league since Christmas are three of the division’s top four; Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal. They have beaten Barcelona and drawn the return fixture since.
Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side have real quality and form on their side opposite a Getafe team that have struggled for consistency of late.
Bournemouth to beat Leeds
The Cherries are pursuing a first-ever European place as Andoni Iraola looks to take the league’s quiet overachievers onto the continental stage. Meanwhile, Leeds are enduring a less enticing battle as they fight to retain their Premier League status.
The Yorkshire side do seem to be winning that battle, partly thanks to Tottenham Hotspur’s shocking plummet to the precipice. But I don’t envisage Leeds leaving the south coast with any points in their pocket here.
Sheffield United to beat Blackburn
Rovers have endured a rough ride this term and find themselves sat just above the relegation zone. They are five points clear of the drop, but 22nd-placed Oxford United have a game in-hand. A precarious position for the former Premier League champions.
Meanwhile, the Blades are a picture of mid-table solidity. The play-offs have gone, but so has any real threat from below. That sort of safety instils confidence and I think Sheffield United take advantage of the nerves and beat Rovers.
Porto to beat Sporting CP
Porto are top of the table and on course to lift a 31st league title while reigning champs Sporting CP are eight points behind in third. But it is cup honours at stake here in this second leg of the Taca de Portugal
Sporting won the first leg by a slender 1-0 margin. But I’m backing Porto to turn it around at home and keep themselves on course for a clean sweep of domestic silverware.
