Monaco grand prix 2024

After a week of conjecture relating to the ineffective two-stop rule in Monaco last Sunday, the Formula 1 tour bus parks up for Spanish Grand Prix this weekend in what looks set to be the last race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the foreseeable future.

With Madrid’s new street circuit set to be the home of Spain’s big F1 weekend from 2026, will there be a fond farewell for Max Verstappen, who has won the previous three editions in Barcelona? Below you can find my Spanish Grand Prix 2025 predictions.

Max Verstappen - race winner @ 7/2

While I don’t necessarily fancy Verstappen’s Red Bull to outqualify both McLarens, I have the champ in mind the second I think about somebody really making something happen on Sunday.

Sure, the guys in papaya have the faster car, and that is why I fancy Oscar Piastri at 6/4 to capture pole position. But when it comes to race day, it’s the Dutchman who I’m willing to get behind for the win.

Just as we saw in Emilia-Romagna a fortnight back, a McLaren pole is no guarantee of Sunday success, with Max usurping Piastri on the second corner at Imola to undo all of the Australian’s hard work in the qualifying sessions.

And while Lando Norris bounced back to form in attaining pole position in Monaco before going on to claim a second victory of the season, I’m not prepared to convince myself that he’s back to 100 per cent just yet.

So that brings me round to Max coming through. Yes, the Red Bull isn’t what it was in 2023 and early 2024, but Verstappen remains the best driver in the world and the gap between the McLarens and the four-time king of the road remains so slight that he has the skill to make the difference.

In terms of the value, I just can’t look past the 7/2 on offer for Max to take the chequered flag first.

There’s no way I’m not backing him at that price given that this is a guy who has won 55 races since the beginning of 2021, including the last three at this track, and continues to push the top two in the Drivers’ Championship all the way.

The odds suggest a 22.2% probability of him winning the race and that’s a huge underestimate of the best in the business.

Isack Hadjar - points finish @ 6/4

For me, Hadjar has been a great addition to the grid this season. After his spell as a promising reserve driver for Red Bull, he has taken to life in the Racing Bulls team superbly.

Already he can boast four points finishes in eight races, with all seven of his efforts since failing to make the start line on day one in Australia having resulted in returns of 13th or better.

The French-Algerian is a driver with plenty of moxie, and he has shown in the opening stages of this season that he knows how to handle the car through traffic. So of all the prospects in the middle of the field, Hadjar at 6/4 looks a great shout for a top-10 finish in Catalunya.
