There are a variety of ways to bet on horse racing with Betfred, but one of the slightly more complicated methods is Yankee Betting, which requires a lot more thought before undertaking.

So, just what is Yankee Betting in Horse Racing? In this explainer article below, I will detail exactly what it means and how to do it with Betfred.

A Yankee bet is a four-selection wager consisting of 11 bets: six doubles, four trebles, and one four-fold accumulator. More commonly, it is used in horse racing, but it can be selected in other sports such as football.

Unlike the traditional accumulator, a Yankee bet isn't reliant upon all 11 legs being successful, as you only need a minimum of two of your selections to win for you to get a return.

You must wager the same amount on each of the 11 legs, though, so a £1 Yankee has a total stake of £11.

For example, you could bet on four horses to win from across four races. Let's say Horse A is priced at 1/1, Horse B at 2/1, Horse C at 3/1, and Horse D at 4/1. Here are the 11 combinations this horse racing Yankee would create, including each payout based on a £1 stake per leg:

Doubles

  1. Horse A (1/1) + Horse B (2/1) = £6
  2. Horse A (1/1) + Horse C (3/1) = £8
  3. Horse A (1/1) + Horce D (4/1) = £10
  4. Horse B (2/1) + Horse C (3/1) = £12
  5. Horse B (2/1) + Horse D (4/1) = £15
  6. Horse C (3/1) + Horse D (4/1) = £20

Trebles

  1. Horse A (1/1), Horse B (2/1) + Horse C (3/1) = £24
  2. Horse A (1/1), Horse B (2/1) + Horse D (4/1) = £30
  3. Horse A (1/1), Horse C (3/1) + Horse D (4/1) = £40
  4. Horse B (2/1), Horse C (3/1) + Horse D (4/1) = £60

Fourfold

  1. Horse A (1/1), Horse B (2/1), Horse C (3/1) + Horse D (4/1) = £120

Total return if all 11 bets win = £345 (£334 winnings + £11 stake)

Each-way Yankee

An each-way Yankee consists of 22 bets involving four selections from different events:

Six win doubles
Six place doubles
Four win trebles
Four place trebles
One win accumulator
One place accumulator

A minimum of two of your selections must win or place for you to get a return.
A £1 each-way Yankee has a total stake of £22.

Yankee Betting on Betfred.com

To place a Yankee bet on Betfred.com, simply make your four selections and head to the betslip, where, under 'Multiples', you can scroll down to 'Yankee' and put your stake, with total returns then automatically calculated next to it.

What are the advantages of Yankee Betting?

A Yankee is similar to a Lucky 15, here on Betfred Insights we provide tips which are regularly posted to its dedicated page. The difference, though, is that there are no four single bets with a Yankee.

What you get, though, are more opportunities to win, as you have 11 different bet combinations included, providing more insurance than a single bet accumulator. Plus, the more combinations that are successful, the more you can win, so it can be a profitable way of betting.

What are the disadvantages of Yankee Betting?

As a Yankee multiplies your stake by 11, it can be a more expensive way of betting, while its more complex nature requires bettors to pay even greater attention before proceeding.

You can use our Yankee Bet Calculator to work out your potential winnings before even placing a bet.
