One of the big appeals for punters in horse racing is getting value in backing an outsider. This is when a bookmaker is offering to pay out several places for a race, making a long shot at 100/1, for example, look more appealing in the market to the bettor.

This is when using an each-way bet, which is effectively two selections for the punter - one for the horse to win and the other for it to place.

Places vary per each race and it is usually dictated by how many runners there are:

  • Three places - fewer than seven runners
  • Four places - fewer than 12 runners
  • Five places - fewer than 16 runners

It is always worth checking on Betfred.com to find out if the race you are planning to bet on is paying out on a number of places you are comfortable with. For more information on extra place betting - check out What is Extra Place Betting in Horse Racing? - from my colleague Joey.

So when it comes to Super Extra Place Betting, this is when the bookmaker offers an extra special promotion for customers to enjoy, and that is for them to pay out more places than usual.

Bookmakers tend to offer Super Extra Place races during the major festivals such as Cheltenham and Aintree. With most of these races having a lot of runners declared, the bookmaker may offer six places instead of four, for example.

It is always worth noting that each-way bets are paid out at 1/5 odds, so that is always worth keeping in mind before you place your bets.

Super Extra Place races will appeal to more people as it effectively boosts their chances of seeing a return from their investment as, if we go off the scenario presented above, they could win money for their horse finishing between first and sixth.

Of course, the returns aren't as high as if the horse were to win but depending on the odds you were given for it, you may see a healthy return from your stake because of it placing.
