Team news

The West Indies have named the same team in the first two T20 internationals and will be reluctant to make changes after winning both games.

India spinner Kuldeep Yadav missed the second T20 due to a sore thumb, but he may return on Tuesday as his replacement Ravi Bishnoi failed to take a wicket. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 171 on his Test debut at the start of this tour, could freshen up the top-order batting.

India Fall of First Wicket Over 25.5 – 10/11

Early wickets have been a feature of this series, which the West Indies lead 2-0 after tense victories by margins of four runs and two wickets.

The Windies triumphed on Sunday despite losing two wickets in the first four balls of their run-chase, but India’s openers should get back on track after stands of just five and 16 in the first two games.

Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill are both thrilling talents and both players hit sixes in Sunday’s second T20 at the Providence Stadium.

Ishan had a productive ODI series against the Windies, scoring 52, 55 and 77, and he and Gill (85) put on 143 for the first wicket in just 19.4 overs in the third ODI.

Gill had an outstanding 2023 IPL campaign for Gujarat Titans, scoring 890 runs with three centuries, and it is surely only a matter of time before India’s openers click in the T20 series so they can exceed a first-wicket runs line of 25.5.

Rovman Powell West Indies Top Run Scorer – 8/1

Nicholas Pooran warmed up for this series by smashing 137 not out off 55 balls in the final of the inaugural Major League Cricket season in the USA and he has played vital innings of 41 and 67 for the West Indies in the first two T20Is.

However, T20 captain Rovman Powell top-scored for the hosts in the first match in Tarouba, making 48 from 32 balls in testing conditions and he looks a big price to repeat the feat in the third match of the series.

Powell has developed into a destructive middle-order batter in T20 cricket, honing his skills in franchise leagues around the world – he also chipped in with a useful 21 in Sunday’s win.

His first T20 international innings of 2023 was an unbeaten 43 off just 18 deliveries, featuring five sixes, against South Africa in Centurion.

Last year Powell slammed a brilliant century in a T20I against England in Bridgetown, hitting ten sixes, before making 68 not out against India in Kolkata and he poses a major threat to their bowlers again.
