India vs USA Prediction: 10/3 Gous the pick of the minnows’ batsmen

We've made it to the 2026 T20 World Cup and Jamie Pacheco previews the biggest game on opening day as favourites and co-hosts India face the USA on Saturday, February 7, start time 13:30. Â
Jamie is mostly focusing on the USA top batsman market, where the classy and experienced Andries Gous is a solid price at 10/3 to top-score for his team, while two big-priced India part-timers can shock the market at 6/1 and 12/1...

India vs USA Preview & Team News:
India Â
The tournament favourites have a nice little gimme first up after berating New Zealand comprehensively in a T20I Series on home soil a couple of weeks ago. Â
This match shouldn't be a problem for them, so of greater interest is how they line up, which will obviously be a big clue as to how they intend to set their team up for the rest of the tournament. Â
One of the big decisions is who opens. Sanju Samson was just about the only batsman not to get a big score across that five-game Series so Ishan Kishan, if fit, should take his place. Â
Tilak Varma is expected to come in at three after missing that NZ series through injury. Â
Shivam Dune's ability to bowl effective medium pace should see him make the XI, too.Â
USAÂ
We don't often see the USA in action but they're perhaps a better side than one would think. They did, after all beat Pakistan at the last World Cup, after a Super Over.Â
Monank Patel is the classic skipper who does the lot: leads the side, opens the batting, keeps wicket. Â
Fellow opener Andries Gous is a class act too with very strong T20 numbers. He's played in some decent T20 leagues around the world and performed well in them. Â
Veteran Ali Khan has a good strike rate as a pace bowler while Harmeet Singh is a tidy little spinning all-rounder in the Liam Dawson/Imad Wasim mould. Â
In a strange way, it might be a good thing that they get their toughest game of the way first up; they're going to lose it anyway, so might as well make any mistakes and learn from them here. Â
India vs USA T20 World Cup Predicted Lineups:
- India: Abishek Sharma, Kishan, Varma, Sky Yadav, Pandya, Dube, Rinku, Axar, Chakravarthy, Kuldeep, Bumrah.
- USA: Monank Patel, Andries Gous, Saiteja Mukkamalla, Milind Kumar, Shayan Jahangir, Shehan Jayasuriya, Shubham Ranjane, Harmeet Singh, Saurabh Netravalkar, Ali Khan, Mohammad Mohsin.
Pitch and conditionsÂ
The Wankhede is a ground we know very well from the IPL, where it's the home of the Mumbai Indians. Â
It's a very high-scoring ground where the advantage normally lies with the chaser, not that that should make much difference here. Â
If India bat first, 240 could easily be on. USA might think of getting to 150 if they get first dibs.Â
Match Winner odds.Â
India are 1/100, USA are 20/1. Â
The latter may spring a couple of surprises in this tournament, and look out for a big price on them when they play Pakistan (again). Â
But it certainly wouldn't be here against the best T20I side in the world on home turf. Not worth discussing this in any more detail.  Â

USA Top Batsman Â
At similar odds, we could make a case for anyone in India's Top 4 so we'll leave that one alone. Â
Strangely, that man Monank Patel isn't currently listed in the USA Top batsman market at the time of writing but then again, he wasn't the player I was interested in anyway. Â
The way I see the USA innings going, I think the two openers will play the waiting game and take whatever they can get without being dismissed, as the middle order isn't so strong, meaning it would be a bad idea to leave too many overs for them to bat. Â
So Gous it is at 10/3. Not only is he the most experienced batter in the side, but he has the best average and, crucially, has played against plenty of classy bowlers in such leagues as the PSL and CPL. Â
That could make all the difference. Â

India Top BowlerÂ
If my theory about the USA's strength being in their opening partnership is correct, then India's opening bowlers may be under-priced here. Â
But once those two are out, there may be some cheap wickets on offer for the part-time India bowlers, and skipper Sky certainly likes to give them a go.  Â
Hardik Pandya (6/1) and Shivam Dube (12/1) a real golden arm, could just get lucky here. So could we, hopefully. Split the minimum stakes between the two. Â
