Wednesday’s first ODI at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium (13:00 BST) marks the start of a rare 50-over face-off between Afghanistan and Bangladesh, with both sides eager to shake off rust and set the tone for the three-match series.

Below are my Afghanistan vs Bangladesh predictions, complete with updated team news and match odds.

Afghanistan vs Bangladesh Betting Tips

  • Azmatullah Omarzai to be Afghanistan’s top batter @ 9/1
  • Najmul Hossain Shanto to be Bangladesh’s top batter @ 7/2
  • Taskin Ahmed to be Bangladesh’s top bowler @ 14/5

Bangladesh arrive in Abu Dhabi riding high after a 3-0 sweep in the T20I leg, while Afghanistan are desperate to end a five-match losing streak across all formats and rediscover their ODI rhythm.

The Tigers have won 11 of their 19 ODIs against Afghanistan, but the Afghan Atalans claimed a historic 2-1 series win over them in Sharjah last year and will be banking on their spin-heavy attack and all-round depth to bounce back.

Team News

Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi leads a reshuffled squad, with Fazalhaq Farooqi, Gulbadin Naib and Noor Ahmad dropped after underwhelming Asia Cup performances in the shorter format.

The batting core features Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, and Rahmat Shah, while fast-bowling all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai balances the side down the order.

Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi spearhead the bowling unit, supported by debutant Bashir Ahmad and mystery spinner AM Ghazanfar, who boasts 21 wickets at an average of 13.57 in ODIs.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, continue to build up to the 2027 World Cup under Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Saif Hassan is set for a much-anticipated ODI debut after a stellar T20I series, likely opening with Tanzid Hasan. The middle-order features Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain and Jaker Ali, who will take care of wicket-keeping duties.

Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman lead the pace attack, while Rishad Hossain and Tanvir Islam offer spin options.

Afghanistan vs Bangladesh Odds

Afghanistan are the favourites at 4/7 to win the opening ODI, with Bangladesh priced at 11/8 to strike first in the series.

The Tigers are 6/5 to post the highest opening partnership, while the Afghan Atalans are 3/5 to edge the first-wicket battle.

The Abu Dhabi pitch is expected to favour bowlers early on, with chasing teams historically struggling under lights.

Azmatullah Omarzai to be Afghanistan’s top batter @ 9/1

Omarzai has quietly become Afghanistan’s most reliable ODI performer, averaging 49.36 with the bat and striking at over 100 since 2024.

His ability to accelerate in the death overs and anchor the lower-middle order gives Afghanistan flexibility, especially if early wickets fall.

With 543 runs and 24 wickets in his last 15 ODI innings, Omarzai’s all-round impact could be decisive in a format where Afghanistan have historically struggled for balance.

Najmul Hossain Shanto to be Bangladesh’s top batter @ 7/2

Bangladesh’s challenge will be converting starts into big scores, a weakness exposed in their summer ODI series defeat in Sri Lanka.

The Tigers’ key number three batter, Najmul Hossain Shanto, struggled in that series on big turning wickets, but he should fare better in Abu Dhabi.

He top-scored for Bangladesh in their only win of the series against Afghanistan in Sharjah last November with a gritty 76 off 119 balls.

Now freed from captaincy duties, Shanto could thrive in a role that demands composure and adaptability.

He averages 40.37 against Afghanistan, having struck a century and two 50s in his nine previous ODI innings against Tuesday’s opponents.

Taskin Ahmed to be Bangladesh’s top bowler @ 14/5

Ahmed has taken 22 wickets in his last 11 ODIs, striking once every 27 balls at an economy of 4.50.

His ability to swing the new ball and return with pace at the death makes him Bangladesh’s most complete fast bowler.

If the Abu Dhabi surface offers early movement, Ahmed could dismantle Afghanistan’s top order before Rashid Khan even gets a look-in.
