Aussies look ominously strong

Australia come into the series in a confident mood after a 5-0 hammering of the West Indies, which made it 12 wins out of 13 matches in the shortest format.

They have a formidable squad led by Mitch Marsh, with batting talent including the evergreen Glenn Maxwell and Tim David, who smashed a 37-ball century against the Windies in the final T20.

The bowling attack boasts variety; Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis provide aggression and control, Ben Dwarshuis brings a different angle, and Josh Hazlewood adds depth in the death overs.

The big talking point in the Australian camp has been the opening pair and Marsh confirmed he would top the order with Travis Head "for the foreseeable future".

Proteas have good depth

South Africa come from a tri-series in Zimbabwe, where they beat the hosts twice but comfortably lost to New Zealand on three occasions.

Aiden Markram leads from the front and remains a dependable T20 performer. Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton bring substantial experience, while the inclusion of Dewald Brevis adds X-factor; he scored 291 runs at a strike rate of over 184 in this year's SA20.

The bowling attack is spearheaded by the ever-threatening Kagiso Rabada, backed by Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger. All-round options like George Linde and Corbin Bosch give them depth and flexibility.

Pitch and conditions

Conditions in Darwin should be hot and dry, with temperatures around 32 °C and little chance of rain. Marrara Stadium hosts its first international T20 but the average score in domestic T20 matches is 155 so it may be a difficult one to score on.

Key odds

Given their dominant form, it's not surprising to see Australia trading at just 4/9 with South Africa available at 7/4.

For Australia, Marsh is favourite for top batter at 10/3, with opening partner Head at 14/5 shot. Maxwell at 11/2 will have his backers; his ability to produce match-winning cameos always means he's in with a chance in this market.

Markram to top score for the visitors is favourite at 3/1, with Rickelton at 10/3 and van der Dussen 7/2. Rickelton's recent domestic form and intent from ball one make him a potential value selection.

On the bowling front, Rabada heads South Africa's list at 5/2, but Bosch looks a more attractive option at 4/1 if selected; his bounce and seam movement could be decisive.

For Australia, reliable spinner Adam Zampa is favourite at 14/5 with Abbott and Dwarshuis at 7/2. Ellis at 10/3 stands out for his wicket-taking ability at the death.

Best Bets

With no value in the match odds market and both sides featuring a balanced range of batting and bowling talent, we'll head to the runs lines markets for our best bets for this opening encounter. Maxwell's line has been set at 20.5 - he could potentially do that in one over - while Brevis was on fire in the SA20 and I fully expect him to cruise past 17.5
