Bivol vs Eifert Fight Preview

The WBO have refused to sanction the fight for their version of the light heavyweight championship, which Bivol holds. The sanctioning body object to the fight taking place in Russia, due to the country’s ongoing conflict with Russia.

It is a well-intentioned but poorly-executed stand. The sanctioning body are retaining Bivol as their champion so, in effect, Germany’s Eifert is the real victim here. If ‘Diesel’ wins this bout, he will not become WBO champion despite beating the titlist in a championship fight.

If Eifert does launch a historic upset, he will at least have the IBF, WBA, The Ring and lineal light heavyweight championships to salve is any wounds from the WBO’s withdrawal.

Bivol left the ring in his most-recent fight as the undisputed light heavyweight champion. February 2025 saw the Russian triumph over countryman Artur Beterbiev in a rematch of their October 2024 classic.

Frustratingly, the brilliant Bivol has not been able to capitalise on the biggest and best night of his illustrious career. Avenging his sole career defeat and standing alone as the best light heavyweight on the planet was a crowning glory. But that prize has become a crown of thorns over the past 15 months.

Negotiations for a score-settling trilogy fight with Beterbiev dragged and stalled. Bivol vacated his WBC belt in order to prioritise the three-match over a bout with mandatory challenger David Benavidez. The American won the vacant strap and has seen his stock rise massively over the past year, while Bivol has been unable to defend his spot atop the division.

Dmitry Bivol

Odds correct at time of publishing.

Bivol went in for back surgery in August when the Beterbiev trilogy fight went to the wall. He has emerged with that herniated disc taken care of, keen to remind boxing of what it’s been missing.

Eifert is conducive to such a revival. The German is a meagre 13-1 and has not dazzled in his bigger fights. A 41-year-old Jean Pascal took him to the wire, with Eifert unable to get a good handle on the former world champion. At times he looked tidy. But then Pascal would find a looping right hook, punishing Eifert’s tendency to withdraw with hands held low.

A gap like that becomes a chasm against an operator like Bivol. The titlist has had more world championship fights than Eifert has had bouts full stop. He beat Pascal eight years ago, closer to the Frenchman’s physical prime. Bivol dominated Jean in a way that looked beyond Eifert.

Of course, any active light heavyweight’s record pales in comparison to Bivol’s, with the exception of his rival Beterbiev. But Eifert’s best scalps are European-level fare like ex-Italian champion Adriano Sperandio and unbeaten countryman Tom Dzemski, who had previously handed Michael his only pro defeat.

A David and Goliath job? Most probably. But everyone said the same about Rico Verhoeven and he very nearly shook the sport to its core. An Eifert victory would not be as cataclysmic, given his status as an active pro boxer rather than a refugee from another sport. But given the fact Rico controversially came up short, a win here would give Eifert a clean run at 2026’s Upset of the Year gong.

Bivol vs Eifert Prediction

Bivol’s inactivity is negated by the fact Eifert has not fought since 2024. The German’s patience has been rewarded, with his long-awaited title match-up finally coming to fruition. But one does not stay ring-sharp on the sidelines.

With ring rust probably being about equal, that leaves Bivol with a clear lead in every other facet of the sport. Better jab and better defence. Hits harder and boasts more experience. Better shot selection and superior ring generalship.

Unless Bivol has been impossibly eroded by his back troubles, I imagine the Russian will dominate this bout from start to finish. A finish that, given Eifert’s propensity to lower his guard, arrives somewhere between rounds seven-to-12. Bivol is 1/25 to win at press time.
