Mason

Undefeated prospect Abdullah Mason risks his 14-0 record this Saturday, August 17 against Mike Ohan Jr. The bout takes place at the Centre Videotron in Quebec City, Canada. The 137-pound catchweight attraction serves as part of the undercard for Christian Mbilli vs Sergey Derevyanchenko. Sky Sports Action will screen the event.

Here are my Mason vs Ohan Jr. predictions ahead of this intriguing match-up.

Mason vs Ohan Jr. Tips

  • Mason by second round knockout @ 4/1
  • Mason by knockout @ 1/8

Mason has done everything right in his young career. Still only 20 years of age, the Cleveland southpaw has amassed a 14-0 record with an impressive 12 knockouts. Top Rank have high hopes for this former amateur standout. This will be Mason’s fourth outing of 2024, as the promotional house looks to season their young starlet.

The youngster has cut his teeth on the sort of fare you’d expect an early-career prospect to be feasting on. Mason has faced the likes of Luis Lebron, who has been in the ring with Olympic silver medalist Duke Ragan, and Ronal Ron, a former opponent of Gabriel Flores Jr. These have been carefully considered tests for the rising Mason.

But it is his handling of these rather standard opponents that is causing excitement Stateside. Mason has dominated his foes with a high-octane style that has dropped jaws whenever he has fought. Starring roles on undercards for the likes of Shakur Stevenson has put eyeballs on the 20-year-old.

So what can Ohan do to stem the tide? ‘Bad Man’ certainly won’t be intimidated, having enthusiastically accepted this fight on short notice. The Massachusetts man will have the size advantage, having fought as high as welterweight in his career. 19-2 with nine knockouts, the American hasn’t laced his gloves up in a year.

Ohan is on a hot streak, though. He has won three on the bounce since a fifth-round knockout loss to Delonte Johnson back in 2022. Only one of those three foes had a winning record, so don’t get too excited, but it shows ‘Bad Man’ has some ambition. Given his record, Ohan is going to be coming to win, even if such an upset seems remote.

The truth is, Mason will not be fighting boxers like Ohan for much longer. His rise necessitates a shift to more accomplished opponents in the near future. American fans are mightily enthusiastic about his chances of reigning at the very top of the game. But the boxing populace is quick to turn if they can sense the old familiar scent of a record being padded.

But in order to access the next tier, Mason must do his job here. It is one his fistic tools equip him well for. I can see this being another showcase for a fighter turning plenty of heads in the industry.

Mason vs Ohan Jr. Prediction

Nobody is going to anoint me as a modern-day Nostradamus for picking Mason to prevail here. Even picking the youngster to pull off the knockout would only net you a 1/8 price. So allow me to go deeper.

I think Mason will get this one done in round two. It is his pet finish, having stopped five of his opponents in that very session. Ohan is brave for taking this but nothing on his record suggests to me he will last long. I’m picking Mason by second round knockout at 4/1.
