Khegai vs Preciado Predictions: ‘Arni’ must take chance to impress

World-ranked featherweight Arnold Khegai takes on Belmar Preciado this Saturday, August 10. The fight emanates from the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico as part of the Luis Alberto Lopez vs Angelo Leo undercard. Sky Sports Action will screen the event live.
Here are the Khegai vs Preciado odds ahead of this featherweight fight.
Khegai is really starting to look the part. After some early career setbacks, ‘Arni’ is really hitting his stride. A 2016 draw with Yerzhan Zalilov stalled his progress, while a 2020 points loss to the world class Stephen Fulton looked set to consign him to B-level.
Khegai worked hard in the latter fight, but a lack of head movement and a straight-up stance made Fulton’s counter-punching work too easy. When ‘Arni’ was able to work his way inside, he did manage to hurt Fulton. But the Ukrainian could not sustain his attacks in the face of a smoother boxer.
Khegai looks to have learned his lessons, though, The 32-year-old has gone 5-0 since that points loss. His efforts have seen him crash the featherweight world rankings. The WBO has Khegai rated third while the IBF has placed him 12th in their own list. A strong showing here could really pave the way to a first world title shot for the Ukrainian star.
Preciado will be hoping to interrupt the world championship procession. On the surface, he looks ill-equipped to do so. The Colombian is 22-7-1 with rapidly worsening form. The 36-year-old must stare wistfully at his best days in his rearview mirror.
A run of four losses in his last five bouts has rapidly consigned his once-promising career to journeyman status. The sole win during that period came over 0-3-1 Jesus Valencia. One has to go back to 2020 to find Preciado’s last victory over a boxer who has experience of winning a fight.
Preciado has mixed with some quality fighters in his time. He took world-ranked Carlos Castro 10 rounds in his last outing. David Carmona, who challenged Omar Narvaez, Naoya Inoue and Kal Yafai for world titles, also outpointed Preciado over 10.
If this paints a picture of Preciado as a durable gatekeeper, able to push name opposition to the limit, it is not entirely accurate. Three of his seven conquerors have managed to knock him out. Ex-world title challenger Jesus Ruiz Garcia took him out in seven rounds while the unremarkable Dennis Contreras needed just five. Hiroshige Osawa, another who has fought for world belts, knocked Preciado out in nine rounds.
The message is clear. If Khegai has world title ambitions, he has to deal with Preciado with the minimum of fuss. No featherweight truly worth his salt has ever particularly struggled with the 36-year-old. If ‘Arni’ does not impress, it could harm his future prospects drastically.
If you have read the above work, you will no doubt have expected to find Preciado as a heavy underdog. That is indeed the case, with the Colombian priced at 10/1 to pull this one off. Khegai is our 1/33 favourite while the draw is 16/1.
