Opet

IBF and The Ring cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia defends his titles against David Nyika this Wednesday, January 8. The fight takes place at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Australia. DAZN will screen the event live on their platform.

Here are my Opetaia vs Nyika predictions ahead of this cruiserweight clash.

Opetaia vs Nyika Betting Tips

  • Opetaia in rounds 4-6 @ 3/1
  • Fight End: Before round 7 @ 6/4

Opetaia was initially supposed to be defending his championship against German knockout artist Huseyin Cinkara. But the 39-year-old pulled out three weeks ago with an injury, leading to Nyika taking his place.

It is an incredibly brave step from the 10-0 prospect. Despite being promoted as a Rocky Balboa-type figure ahead of this fight, Nyika’s reality is far different. He is not a down-on-his-luck bar fighter getting one last shot at the big time.

Nyika has won an Olympic bronze and is a two-time Commonwealth gold medalist. He is the sort of fighter who is usually moved carefully, gradually towards world title opportunities. But instead, with just 10 pro fights on the clock, he takes on the most feared cruiserweight on the planet.

It is a testament to his confidence. The “0” is usually the most protected ground in boxing. UFC realised long ago that fans would rather see competitive fights than one-sided processions. Boxing has been slower on the uptake, with keeping prospects unbeaten still a priority. But Nyika has bucked the trend and taken this fight at short notice.

This fight in particular might not be a great advert for bravery. Opetaia is perhaps the most destructive cruiserweight since David Haye. Mairis Briedis is the only man to take him the distance since 2019. Every one else has been knocked out by the Aussie southpaw.

Ellis Zorro went down in a single round. Jordan Thompson in four. Brave Jack Massey lasted six sessions before his night was over. Apart from Briedis, the legendary Latvian he took the title off before beating him in the rematch, nobody has been able to hang with Opetaia.

Will Nyika be any different? The consensus is that he has the ability to reign as world champion, but that this opportunity has come a little soon. The only real names on his record are a faded Robert Berridge, who challenged Dmitry Bivol a lifetime ago, and ex-contender Tommy Karpency. Solid learning fights but not the immediate precursor to a shot at the IBF world title.

And yet I feel Nyika should be applauded. Will he win this fight? Probably not. But will he gain more from it than he would have against another veteran fringe contender? Almost certainly.

Opetaia can bring about destruction, of course. But if Nyika can hang in there and use the skills that have filled his mantle full of medals, he could make a real fight of this. Good, hard rounds with the best cruiserweight in the world are only going to make Nyika a better fighter. He’s coming to win, but even if the 29-year-old falls short, he can leave the fight with some valuable lessons.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Opetaia knows that phrase all too well. He was the underdog himself when he beat Briedis in their first meeting. Now the Australian finds himself opposite a hungry New Zealander with everything to gain. Nyika will throw everything at this opportunity. Opetaia must be ready.

Opetaia vs Nyika Prediction

Opetaia always gets his man. The IBF and The Ring champion usually does so inside the distance. Nyika is talented but lacks experience at this elevated level. I think one day we will see him in a world title fight he can win. But that day is not this Wednesday.

I’m going for Opetaia to win in rounds 4-6 at odds of 3/1. He is just too good, too strong and too experienced at this stage. But make no mistake, Nyika will come again.
