Hughes vs Sylvester Odds

'Maximus' is priced as a 4/9 favourite to beat his less experienced foe. Sylvester is a solid 21/10 bet while the draw is on the market at 12/1.

Hughes vs Sylvester Fight Preview

‘Maximus’ has given fight fans so much to savour down the years. Upset wins, big fights and a body of work that speaks to the bravery and resilience of the proud Yorkshireman.

At the age of 36, it feels like there isn’t much left to give. A former IBO titlist and British champion, Hughes has impressed on both sides of the Atlantic. You’d be forgiven for thinking he has no more worlds to conquer.

Maxi has tested himself against world class fighters like ex-unified kingpin George Kambosos Jr. and fast-rising phenom William Zepeda. While the latter stopped him in four, most observers think Hughes deserved the decision against Australia’s Kambsos.

Hughes has beaten former world champion Kid Galahad, dethroned Mexican dangerman Jovanni Straffon for IBO honours and defeated top domestic names like Jono Carroll, Gary Cully and Paul Hyland Jnr. He entered the Straffon fight as a huge underdog carrying a 23-5-2 record. Since then he has mixed with some of the best in the world at home and abroad.

Maxi Hughes has gone further than anyone thought possible. But has he gone far enough? Hughes’ 2025 suggested he had more distance left to travel. A fine points win over the quality Archie Sharp in May augured well. December’s majority decision loss to Bakhodur Usmonov suggested ‘Maximus’ had more in the tank. The wider boxing fraternity certainly felt he had done enough to be awarded the points nod against the amateur star from Tajikistan.

But that old Hughes bravery came back to bite him in March. The 36-year-old took a short-notice assignment against Pierce O’Leary. Mark Chamberlain was supposed to fight the unbeaten Irishman in Dublin on the Jazza Dickens vs Anthony Cacace undercard, but he withdrew two weeks before the scheduled IBO title bout.

‘Maximus’ stepped up but looked out of sorts, taking a frightful beating from the come-forward Irishman. He was withdrawn in the fifth with his eye badly swollen shut. The fact he is back in the ring two months later is a miracle, quite frankly. A miracle or a bad idea. I will not profess to be close enough with Hughes’ team to know which.

Lewis Sylvester

Sylvester is no Pierce O’Leary, but he is a solid domestic concern. Sam Noakes overwhelmed him in four rounds of a British title bout in his biggest outing. But Syvlester has beaten Reece Mould and utterly poleaxed Jimmy First in an English title bout. Hughes has fought many fighters with more fearsome reputations, but the 18-1 Sylvester is no mug either.

This is the litmus test for Hughes, I suppose. Lose here and the gloves must go on the peg. Win and there’s probably a decent domestic title fight out there for a fighter who always sends the fans home happy. But is anything that awaits Hughes in victory actually worth the potential catastrophe of a defeat? That decision, no matter what you or I think, is squarely on the shoulders of the fighter.

Hughes vs Sylvester Predictions

Two months is a very quick turnaround these days, even after a win. But after being withdrawn in the fifth round of a fight where your eye was beaten shut? One wonders what sort of Maxi Hughes we’ll see on Saturday night.

If it’s the one we’re used to. The one who confounded Kambosos and gave Usmonov conniptions, I think he beats Sylvester comfortably. But how does a beating like the one O’Leary dished out sit on a 36-year-old body’s resistance?

I’d wager not well. I think Hughes is a tremendous fighter who has given us some unbelievable nights over the years. But I don’t think a man emerges from a fight like his last outing fully intact. Not after just two months to recuperate. So I’m going with Sylvester to spring the surprise in this one at 21/10.
