Daniel ‘Swift’ Garcia takes on Daniel Gonzalez this Saturday, October 18 in what is being billed as his retirement fight. The fight marks the two-weight world champion’s 10th appearance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight will be broadcast on Millions PPV. One hopes that is not the price.

Read on for my Garcia vs Gonzalez predictions.

Garcia vs Gonzalez Odds

Garcia is 2/9 to emerge from his retirement party with the gold watch of one last win. Gonzalez is priced to ruin the celebration with an 18/5 upset. Boxing's most unsatisfying conclusion, the dreaded draw, is 18/1.

Garcia vs Gonzalez Fight Preview

Old ‘Swift’ is a sure-fire Hall of Famer. At least he would be, if he could stop fighting long enough to be inducted. Boxers have to wait five years post-career to be eligible for International Boxing Hall of Fame induction. A cold-hearted cynic (I also answer to “Joey”) could compellingly argue that wiping the last five years of Garcia’s career from the record books would make no difference to his legacy and allow him to enjoy his well-deserved coronation now, rather than in 2030.

Winding the clock back to 2020 brings us to… oh sh*t, why is everyone wearing masks? Sorry, flashbacks. In boxing terms, it delivers us to a time when Garcia was about to lose on points to IBF welterweight kingpin Errol Spence Jr.

‘Swift’ did okay in that fight but never came close to winning it, so we’ll excise that one on the grounds that it saves him from a 12-round hiding and means his career does not end behind closed doors while we all baked banana bread and still found the idea of Zoom a novelty rather than a grim stain on our collective existence.

That leaves his unanimous nod over fringe contender Ivan Redkach in January 2020 as Garcia’s last fight in our little thought experiment. Danny gets the Barclays Center farewell that he wants, just five years sooner. All of Garcia’s wins over a collection boxing’s greats are retained, as are every single one of his multiple world titles. All that and Garcia would have hit Canastota back in June with a Hall of Fame 2025 class that included Manny Pacquiao, Michael Nunn and Vinny Paz.

But boxing farewells are rarely packaged as neatly as that. If Roy Jones Jr. retires after beating John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight title, he goes down as arguably the greatest of all time. If the referee applied his count a bit more fastidiously when ‘Buster’ Douglas hit the deck, perhaps ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson would have met Evander Holyfield in a year where his punch was still more dangerous than his teeth.

So Garcia comes into this fight with Gonzalez looking to give himself that rarest of boxing farewells. One that leaves the public fulfilled and his legacy intact. His last win came in 2022, a points victory over former welterweight title contender Jose Benavidez Jr.

After that came an attempt at a glorious final curtain, as Garcia met WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara in September 2024. The champion is five years older than Garcia and perhaps in some way that is how ‘Swift’ rationalised the fight. But Lara is naturally bigger and has stayed busy while Garcia has dipped in and out of the sport since his prime. Danny’s corner pulled him out after nine rounds of punishment. There would be no world title to carry off into the sunset.

A year on, Gonzalez seems more like it as a farewell foe. He is a patchy 22-4-1 with the biggest fight on his record a points loss to former contender Chris Algieri. Danny O’Connor wiped him out in three years back in 2017, but he has not been KO’ed since.

Apart from their first names both share a spate of inactivity in recent years. Gonzalez had one fight in 2022, none in 2023, two last year and is yet to hit the ring in the first nine months of 2025.

That is where the similarities end. Garcia has beaten Nate Campbell, Kendall Holt, Erik Morales, Amir Khan, Zab Judah, Lucas Matthyse, Lamont Peterson, Paulie Malignaggi and Robert Guerrero. More of those men will reach the Hall of Fame than won’t. ‘Swift’ is a former WBC, WBA and The Ring super lightweight champion and an ex-WBC welterweight kingpin.

In every metric, these two men are streets apart. But on the night, one has an eye on the exit and the other is aiming to secure the biggest win of his career. That disparity could make for an enthralling bout. Either way, this is going to be historic. Unless Garcia fights again, of course. But a boxer wouldn’t lie about retirement, would they?

Garcia vs Gonzalez Prediction

This fight has been envisaged as a straight-forward curtain call for Garcia. In that regard, I think Gonzalez was a good pick. If ‘Swift’ retains any of the speed and pedigree that gave him such a nickname, he should negotiate this scrap without too much danger. I’ll take Garcia to leave with dignity in a points win at 2/9.
