Fundora

Gabriela Fundora defends her IBF flyweight title against Daniela Asenjo this Saturday, August 10. The world championship fight takes place at The Michelob Ultra Arena at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The bout will serve as part of the undercard for Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs Serhii Bohachuk. DAZN will screen the card live.

Here are my Fundora vs Asenjo predictions ahead of this title encounter.

Fundora vs Asenjo Tips

  • Fundora on points @ 1/3
  • Fight to go the distance - Yes @ 2/7

Fundora looks every inch the future superstar of women’s boxing. The Floridian flyweight is just 22 years of age and already wears championship gold. An unbeaten 13-0-1, Fundora’s six knockouts show a crowd-pleasing streak that has stayed with her even as she has moved up in levels.

Underlining this, Fundora’s two world title fights thus far have each been settled by knockout. ‘Sweet Poison’ stopped four-time flyweight queen Arely Mucino in five rounds to snatch the title. It was the outgoing champion’s first loss in eight years.

Fundora followed that up by inflicting the first loss of Christina Cruz’s career, knocking her out in the 10th and final round of her first defence. Many boxers find their power wanting at world level, having grown accustomed to stopping lesser fighters on the way up. But Fundora’s knockout touch actually seems to have grown more effective against better opposition.

Asenjo is a worthy challenger for Fundora’s IBF gold. She came up narrowly short in her previous world title fight. ‘La Leona’ took then-WBA super flyweight champion Maribel Ramirez to a draw back in 2022. Asenjo has also held the lesser IBO world championship up at super flyweight.

Unbeaten since 2019, Asenjo deserves her place in this high-profile bout. Wins over the likes of former world champion Linda Laura Lecca and title challenger Casey Croft have established her as a force to be reckoned with. Now it is Fundora’s turn to try and reckon with said force.

On paper, Fundora has the power advantage here. The champion has a 46.5% knockout percentage against just 12.5% for her challenger. But Asenjo has done much of her competing up at super flyweight and bantamweight. Perhaps she will find her strength more accustomed to flyweight. Equally, fighting at a lower weight might sap her physically.

Asenjo rules the roost in terms of experience, completing 158 professional rounds to 77 for Fundora. The champion has more world title experience, having boxed twice with a major belt on the line compared to just once for Asenjo.

This is an interesting match-up with numerous x-factors in play. How they manifest will ultimately dictate the flow of two careers. Will the fast-rising young gun-slinger pull it off? Or can the underdog who came oh-so-close take that step into history?

Fundora vs Asenjo Fight Odds

Fundora opens as a 1/20 favourite, having shown a dominant streak since debuting in 2021. Asenjo won’t let her underdog status bother her and any like-minded punters can get 8/1. A draw is 16/1.

Fundora vs Asenjo Prediction

I really do see star potential in Fundora. She has been highly active and absolutely impressive across her 14 career fights. We could be looking at a multi-weight world champion here. I think the road to all that starts here. I’m backing Fundora by decision at 1/3.
