World-ranked super featherweights square off this Friday, June 21 when Andres Cortes takes on Abraham Nova. The action goes down at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sky Sports Action will broadcast the bout.

Here are my Cortes vs Nova predictions ahead of a spicy 130-pound scrap.

Cortes vs Nova Tips

  • Cortes on points @ 11/10
  • Fight to go the distance - Yes @ 8/15

‘Savage’ Andres Cortes has looked the part in 21 pro bouts so far. Twelve stoppages in those 21 victories is steady rather than spectacular, but Cortes has finished his previous two opponents. The last of those was the decent Bryan Chevalier, who couldn’t endure four rounds with our subject. Before that he halted Xavier Martinez in seven sessions, a fighter who went the full 10 with the world class Robson Conceicao.

Cortes takes a giant leap forward in this one in Abraham Nova. Nicknamed ‘El Super’ because of course he is, the 30-year-old is as legitimate as they come. He could very well be a world champion had he had the rub of the green against O’Shaquie Foster in his last outing. That bout ended in a split decision win for the WBC champion, with Nova knocked down in the last stanza of a tense contest.

This is a dangerous fight for Cortes, but an important one from a learning point of view. He’s had 21 fights now, it is time to put up or shut up. ‘Savage’ sits in two of the four world ranking lists and in order to climb those, you have to beat men like Abraham Nova.

This isn’t a gatekeeper or a compliant journeyman. It isn’t an eye-catching name whose moniker is worth more than their skills these days. Nova is in his physical prime, coming off a world title fight in which he performed admirably. What Cortes is facing is a boxer who is coming to win at all costs. Maybe that is exactly what he needs.

These tests can go one of two ways. Either Cortes will step up to the challenge and put his stamp on the super featherweight division with a big win. Or he will go the route we have seen the likes of Amir Khan stumble down. The touted Olympic silver medalist was blasted out of his boots by Breidis Prescott in his 19th pro fight. That extra step-up in class caught ‘King’ Khan out.

Cortes cannot risk the same thing here. But he will have to work hard for this. Foster will attest to that. Nova is able to cause problems for even the most skilled pros. He is not as flashy as his ‘El Super’ Nova branding suggests but he is relentless, intelligent and determined. Bad fighters don’t beat him. Robeisy Ramirez caused the only other reverse on Nova’s record.

Cortes vs Nova Fight Odds

Cortes is a 4/11 favourite to prevail here, giving him an implied probability of 73.3% for a victory. Nova is a very eye-catching 23/10, good value considering his obvious ability. That’s 30.3% in percentage terms. If you fancy the 5.3% shot, a draw is priced up at 18/1.

Cortes vs Nova Prediction

Nova tempts me here. He is game enough and wily enough to cause problems. But I do believe in what Cortes brings. It is too soon to decisively call him a future star, but that clamour will increase if he wins here.

I am going to put my neck on the line and opt for Cortes to take this one on points. Nova is too tough and knows too much for an early night. I’m picking Cortes on points at a price of 11/10.
