Bourke vs Lane Predictions: A bantamweight belter for the British belt

Chris Bourke and Ashley Lane clash for the vacant British bantamweight championship on Friday March 22 at the iconic York Hall in Bethnal Green. TNT Sports 1 televises this fine title scrap at the cauldron-like London venue. Here are my Bourke vs Lane predictions ahead of a big Friday fight.
Bourke vs Lane Tips
Once more into the breach for Bourke, who has experienced British title heartbreak before. The 29-year-old lost a unanimous decision to Marc Leach up at super bantamweight for the national crown two years ago. Leach’s movement and superb counter-punching dominated proceedings as Bourke looked too one-paced to triumph.
Bourke has won all three of his fights since, rebuilding at the six-round level while biding his time for this title chance. Each victory, two of which came by stoppage, took place in the confines of York Hall. The venue also played host to his loss to Leach too. A chance for redemption in surroundings that are becoming a boxing living room for the co-challenger.
Lane knows the pain of failing on the title stage too. Like Bourke, his Lonsdale defeat came up at super bantamweight. Brad Foster was the champion on that occasion, repelling Lane’s efforts via unanimous decision. Lane’s Commonwealth title was on the line in that encounter, with the champion hitting the deck in the first and 12th rounds. These catastrophic bookends defined the scorecards and the belts ebbed away.
Lane will be hoping his fortunes aren’t as nebulous against Bourke. He is an underdog, with odds of 7/1 suggesting a 12.5% chance of a win. His ring fortunes have been mixed over the years. A 17-10-2 record suggests a fighter fortunate to get this chance. But the Commonwealth and English titles he has won hint at a quality that defies his modest ledger.
While he doesn’t lack titles, Lane does lack punch power. He has just two career stoppages, both coming on cuts. Meanwhile, he has been stopped in six of his 10 defeats. For his part, Bourke packs a decent bang. Eight of his 13 victories have ended by knockout. If anyone is ending this one early, it’s likely to be him.
That’s exactly what I’m predicting Bourke to do here. Lane is game but ultimately, with a couple of exceptions, he usually falls short at this level. He’s prone to cuts and has been stopped numerous times by other means. I feel like he will fight bravely but succumb in the middle rounds. A finish in round six is priced at 15/2 and I think this is broadly the way this one is headed. Bourke just looks to have a little too much for his opponent here.
