Catalans dragons vs leeds rhinos

Pacesetters Leeds face baking hot temperatures at the Stade Gilbert Brutus on Saturday (8pm BST, Sky Sports+) as they bid to win on a ground that has been a real problem for them in recent seasons.

The Rhinos are flying at the top of the table, and travel to face a Catalans side who suffered one of the biggest shocks of the season last week in losing 60-18 to Toulouse. Below are my Catalans Dragons vs Leeds Rhinos predictions, supported by team news and match odds.

Catalans Dragons vs Leeds Rhinos Odds

Catalans Dragons are 4/1 underdogs, implying a 20% probability of success, with Leeds 2/11, and the draw offered at 22/1.

Team News

Catalans were humiliated last week in a result that absolutely nobody could have seen coming. Newly-promoted Toulouse came from behind and scored 10 tries in a barely-believable result that leaves the Dragons shell-shocked as they welcome the Betfred Super League leaders.

Boss John Cartwright makes two changes this week. Franck Maria is back from suspension while Australian new boy Edenn Rogers-Smith could make his debut.

The men to make way are Lenny Marc and Giovanni Descalzi.

Captain Ben Garcia will make his 300th career appearance in the week the club announced his intention to retire at the end of the season.

Leeds are forced into one change after veteran winger Ryan Hall was forced off at Magic Weekend through injury. The Rhinos reshuffled on the day to put utility Chris Hankinson out wide, but there is a more like-for-like replacement this week as Riley Lumb gets the nod to start on the left wing.

That means a place in the squad for fellow youngster Alfie Edgell in the only Leeds change in what has become a pretty consistent squad.

Handicap 3-Way: Leeds Rhinos -16 @ 20/21

Catalans were unfortunate to come away with nothing at Warrington a couple of weeks ago but followed that up with a bizarre collapse against Toulouse in Castres.

Leeds walloped Bradford as they go from strength to strength at the top, so on the face of it this one feels like a formality.

However, Leeds have an extraordinarily bad recent record on trips to Perpignan. Not only have the Rhinos not won on Dragons soil since September 2022, they have not scored there either. Not a single point away to the Dragons in four years.

The biggest of those Catalans wins was a 61-0 demolition in 2023.

So we should be backing against Leeds in this one shouldn't we? Not a chance. Those stats and the head-to-head is bizarre and the heat will suit the French. But this Leeds team is so much better than the Dragons.

The game at AMT Headingley in April finished 46-4, and the handicap this weekend is 16 - despite that awful Leeds record outlined above.

The way Leeds are playing I fancy them to put those past results to bed.

Chris Hankinson Anytime Tryscorer @ 7/4

Maiko Sivo is just 2/7 to score again for Leeds this weekend and in doing so equal the Super League record by scoring in 11 consecutive games.

As we stated last week, the Fijian flyer is so reliable he is almost unbackable. We have also noted that Sivo is a player who tends to strike at the end of games too when defences are tired, so it might be worth looking at the 5/1 on offer for the last try of the game or first try of the second half.

Sivo was on for the last try of the game last week at 4/1 until Ash Handley touched down in the very last minute!

Again I'm looking for value elsewhere however, and am sticking with a winning formula.

The versatile Chris Hankinson has returned for us in each of the last two games and has six in six games. He is 7/4 to score in the south of France, as he did in the away date with his former club Toulouse.
