Paraguay were really impressive against Germany and I think they were good value for their penalty-shootout success. However, there were plenty of question marks over the Germans and their quality, and that was quite quickly found out as they exited in the round of 32.

France are the best team at this tournament and should have no such trouble. We will come onto some of the other selections shortly, but let’s start with the very simple pick of France to win in 90 minutes.

France over 3.5 goals

France have incredibly scored three goals or more in every World Cup game so far, hitting three against Sweden, Iraq and Senegal and four past Norway. Their front four is simply sensational, with Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and one of Bradley Barcola or Desire Doue tearing teams apart.

It is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to attacking talent, and I don’t think I would back against them having a field day against one of the big boys in this competition, let alone Paraguay. The underdogs are defensively solid for the most part and goalkeeper Orlando Gill was the star of the show in the win over Germany, but ultimately I think France will be able to score at will once more.

Kylian Mbappe to score 2+

Mbappe in a France shirt is something else. He is one of the best international football players we have ever seen, and looks on track to appear in his third World Cup final in a row, having won it in 2018 and scoring a hat-trick in the 2022 final.

Still just 27, he will become the greatest World Cup goalscorer at some stage, probably by the end of this tournament. Six goals in four matches so far, I expect him to bag another brace against a Paraguay outfit that may not be able to live with a player of his quality.

Matias Galarza to get booked (Sub Switch)

I’m going to back a Paraguayan card, and the feisty wide man Matias Galarza has caught my eye. He was everywhere against Germany, at the thick of all the action as he was fouled three times, made four fouls himself and was booked.

He also got an assist and scored a penalty in the shootout, so is likely to line up on the left of midfield again. This is going to be another battling display from Paraguay, and I think Galarza is a good price to pick up another card.
