Egypt to win

I think this will be a tight game, but I do think Egypt has the superior quality. They went unbeaten in the group stage, drawing with Belgium and Iran and beating New Zealand, and they’ve looked good throughout this World Cup.

Australia beat Turkey in their opener, but then failed to score in their subsequent two matches and they might find a knockout game a step too far. I’d rather side with Hossam Hassan’s men, who have plenty of attacking talent and should be able to beat Australia in 90 mins.

Mohamed Salah to score (Sub Switch)

Mohamed Salah is not the player he once was, but he can still produce big moments for his side. He scored in that win over New Zealand, is on penalties, and it feels like he will get a World Cup knockout goal in 2026.

He created five chances and had five shots in that win over New Zealand, and I think Egypt should win this game comfortably. I’m backing Salah to get his moment in the spotlight.

Betfred's Sub Switch offer rolls your bet to the oncoming substitute, so you stay in the game, even when your player doesn’t.

Australia vs Egypt Odds

Omar Marmoush 1+ shot on target (Sub Switch)

The Manchester City forward will lead the line for Egypt, and I think he’s in a strong position to have a shot on target. He had five shots in the opener, none on target, and had a shot in both other games in the group, so he’s not shy at pulling the trigger.

With Egypt’s expected high chance creation, I’m happy to back him to test the goalkeeper at some stage.

Nestory Irankunda 1+ shot on target (Sub Switch)

I’ll also back Australia’s star man Nestory Irankunda to land an effort on target, in what I believe could be a far more entertaining match than people are expecting. The Watford man scored in the opening win over Turkey and had two shots on target, while he also had two shots in Australia’s final group game.

He will be Australia’s main threat on the counter-attack, and his pace should give him the opportunty to land a shot on goal.
