Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia were a long way adrift of Japan and Australia in the third round of World Cup qualifying, but the Green One saw off Iraq and Indonesia in round four to book their place at the World Cup. It’s a big tournament for the Saudis, who have been confirmed as the 2034 World Cup hosts and their campaign starts with a Miami contest against Uruguay.

Nawaf Al-Aqidi, who was battling Mohammed Al-Owais for the goalkeeping spot is out with a muscle injury meaning Al-Owais is likely to get the nod to start between the sticks.

Experienced boss Georgios Donis looks set to deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Firas Al-Buraikan set to lead the line.

Musab Al-Juwayr will operate in the number ten position, while captain Salem Al-Dawsari, who enjoyed a productive season in the Saudi Pro League, will provide a goal threat from wide areas.

Mohamed Kanno, who is in line for his 78th international cap, is an experienced and combative midfielder, who will be charged with protecting the Saudi Arabia defense.

Uruguay

Uruguay have a number of injury concerns as their World Cup opener approaches.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Ronald Araujo, Jose Gimenez, Matias Vina and Sebastian Caceres are all doubts for the clash with Saudi Arabia and boss Bielsa may already be forced into changes.

Wolves defender Santiago Bueno could deputise at the back should Araujo or Caceres fail to recover in time.

Bielsa is likely to set the Sky Blue up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez set to lead the line.

Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde could form a central midfield partnership with Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte.

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay Key Players:

Salem Al-Dawsari (Saudi Arabia)

Salem Al-Dawsari is a veteran of 110 caps and the Saudi Arabia star could play a lead role for the Green One against Uruguay.

The 34-year-old scored eight goals for club side Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League in the 25-26 season and the left-sided forward also provided eight assists in just 26 appearances.

Al-Dawsari scored in games against Argentina and Mexico at the World Cup four years ago and Saudi Arabia will once again hope their star man can deliver.

Federico Valverde (Uruguay)

Federico Valverde is capable of operating at a high level in a number of positions and the Real Madrid man is set to be Uruguay’s driving force from the centre of midfield.

The 27-year-old scored five goals and provided eight assists for Real Madrid in La Liga this season and there was also a memorable hat-trick in Real’s 3-0 Champions League victory over Manchester City.

Valverde can break the lines from midfield, while also providing service to Darwin Nunez in attack and Uruguay's forward play is likely to start with the 27-year-old.
