Ivory Coast vs Ecuador Prediction: La Tri to edge battle of the dark horses

A superb spectacle in store at the Philadelphia Stadium on Monday morning (12am BST, live on BBC One) as Ivory Coast and Ecuador - dark horses for many at this World Cup - face off in Group E.

Ecuador are 6/4 favourites to claim all three points, giving them an implied probability of 40%. Ivory Coast are available at 11/5 (31%). The draw is a 15/8 shot.

Favourite to open the scoring? That's Ecuador captain Enner Valencia at 5/1. He's followed by teammate Jordy Caicedo at 6/1.

Team News

Ivory Coast centre-back Evan Ndicka is unlikely to feature due to a thigh issue picked up in the Rome Derby last month. For Ecuador, Enner Valencia is a slight doubt, but he's expected to start. Otherwise, it's a clean bill of health for both sides.

Respective managers Emerse Fae and Sebastian Beccacece have selection dilemmas on their hands, though.

For the 'home' team, Fofana, Doue, Sangare, Kessie, Diomande and Amad look certain, while the other positions are up for grabs.

It's tougher to predict how Ecuador will set up, even in terms of shape, but expect the likes of Galindez, Pacho, Hincapie, Caicedo, Paez and Valencia - if fit - to feature from the start.

Ecuador to win @ 6/4

I've got a lot of time for this Ivory Coast side. It's probably the best since the golden generation of 2014 - Toure, Drogba and Co - and the 2023 AFCON heroes aren't to be taken lightly in North America this summer.

However, I've got even more time for Ecuador. This is their golden generation.

£115m Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo. Back-to-back Champions League winner Willian Pacho. Premier League champion Piero Hincapie. The veteran Enner Valencia. Pervis Estupinan. Kendry Paez. Joel Ordonez.

They're a brilliant outfit, who've been mightily impressive in the build-up to this World Cup.

La Tricolor's last defeat? NINETEEN games ago, losing 1-0 to Brazil in September 2024.

They finished runner-up to world champions Argentina, ahead of Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil, in qualifying, despite a three-point deduction before a ball had been kicked.

Eight wins, eight draws and just two losses. Only 14 goals scored - the main weakness for this team - but just five conceded. A rock-solid defence.

They're going to be extremely hard to beat for any team in this competition, starting with Les Elephants on Monday morning. I'm backing them to hold firm once again, and hoping they'll be able to take a chance of two.

I couldn't put anyone off taking the slightly shorter price for the security of 2-Up, but as goals are at a premium with this Ecuador side, I'm just dipping into the standard Match Result market.

If Ecuador are to find the back of the net, it's probably going to be through their all-time top scorer (49).

At 36, the former Fenerbahce striker, who's currently plying his trade at Pachua in Mexico, remains his country's hitman up top.

He's responsible for over half of their 19 goals scored during this unbeaten run of as many games, and he bagged eight in 22 for his club during the 2025/26 season.

I'm backing him to open the scoring in Philly.
