Ramos vs Mosley Jr Odds

Ramos is heavily favoured to win in Texas, marketed at 1/14 as we go to press. Mosley is priced at 17/2 with the draw weighing in at 18/1.

Ramos vs Mosley Jr Fight Preview

Both of Saturday’s combatants would tell you this WBC interim title chance has been a long time coming. Putting aside the spurious nature of these secondary belts, there is no question this opportunity is significant in the careers of Ramos and Mosley.

The former is only 24 years old, but Ramos is an ever-present having debuted as a teen in 2018. ‘El Mono’ scored big wins over former WBC interim champ Brian Mendoza, Olympian Javier Molina and unbeaten prospect Joseph Spencer. But a loss to world class Erickson Lubin in 2023 derailed Ramos’ youth revolution.

The best come back stronger and that appears to be what Ramos has done. Three knockout wins, including one over ex-world champion Jeison Rosario, have propelled the 24-year-old into this WBC title fight. The hard-punching southpaw will be looking to continue an electric run of finishes.

If Ramos has had to wait for his opportunity, imagine how Mosley feels. The son of Hall of Famer ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley is now 34 years of age, a decade older than Saturday’s foe.

By that age, Shane Jr’s illustrious father was already a three-weight world champion with iconic victories over Oscar De La Hoya, Jesse James Leija and Fernando Vargas in his locker. ‘Sugar’ had 14 wins in world title fights by that stage of his career.

Mosley Jr has had to carry that heavy legacy around with him. Boxing progeny are rarely as good as their fathers. But some do at least join them in the pantheon of world champions. Cory Spinks, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Laila Ali and Tim Tszyu are just some of boxing's golden children who followed their fathers to title success.

After the legacy of his Dad has been an albatross has been a cross to bear for Mosley Jr, ahead of this fight it can actually be a comfort. Because the elder Shane did some excellent work after the age of 34. Wins over former champions like Luis Collazo and Ricardo Mayorga as well as a WBA welterweight title victory over Antonio Margarito in one of his most complete performances.

Mosley Sr did not retire until he was 44 years of age, which in theory gives his son another decade to impress. But, unless your name is George Foreman or Bernard Hopkins, it is rarely advisable to still be taking punches at that ripe old age. But Mosley Jr’s recent form suggests he could end his career with a flourish.

A majority decision loss to Ireland’s Jason Quigley in 2021 looked to put a cap on Mosley’s progress. But a close victory over tough-nut Gabriel Rosado set him on a course of five consecutive victories. Beating former world champion Daniel Jacobs last time out set the table for this WBC interim title crack.

These are boxing’s patient men. The fighters who have seen their chances evaporate before earning further opportunities through grit and determination. A proper fight, this one.

Ramos Jr vs Mosley Jr Prediction

Ramos is horrible to fight against. His high guard swallows punches before he looks to set up his punishing straight left in range. The 24-year-old throws that shot with disconcerting speed. He rattled Joey Spencer along the ropes with a volley of them in that stoppage win.

Mosley’s key to victory will be his defence. If that shoulder-roll is working hard and he steps out of the pocket when the Ramos fire comes back, he can build up a points lead. But Ramos is impossible to avoid for 12 rounds. Shane must pick his battles and not get drawn in to a war.

I just think Ramos is too relentless for Mosley, who sometimes appears tired and a little ragged late in fights. The Jacobs win is a case in point, with Mosley needing some caution to ensure he would still have enough stamina in the later rounds.

I’m picking Ramos to pick up the victory here at 1/14.
