Vuong vs Gwynne Odds

Vuong is 1/3 here, with the bookies backing the youngster to have learnt a thing or two from that tricky first fight. Gwynne is 11/4 to clinch the cigar after going close last year. The draw is 12/1. Worth a look.

Vuong vs Gwynne Fight Preview

The first fight was the definition of ‘hard to score’. Some called it a robbery, citing the fact Gwynne pressured his man and threw more punches. Others pointed out that Vuong’s shots were harder, evident by the cuts opened on Gwynne’s face over the course of 10 gritty rounds. Opinion was so evenly-split that one almost feels like a draw would have been the only fair result.

Boxing doesn’t usually do fair, but it is heartening to see Gwynne given another chance here. After all, no other fighter has given the fast-rising Vuong as much to think about in his young career. I’d venture that the 23-year-old learned more in half an hour that night than he had in the five pro fights he’d had before meeting Gwynne.

That right there is the issue with a touted prospect. Look anything less than spectacular every time you fight and the baying public will jump on you. Suddenly you’re a ‘hype job’ and you have been ‘exposed’.

But where is a fighter supposed to learn if he cannot dip beneath flawless performance on the way up? Vuong was not great against Gwynne. Not his untouchable self. But the kid bit down on his gumshield, slugged it out and snatched a win. He also signed on the dotted line for a rematch. Plenty of prospects have had the night from hell and never gone near the perpetrator ever again. But ‘The One’ is fronting up to his foe and we are in for another absorbing 10-rounder.

Gwynne is 35 years of age and there is very little he has not seen or done in the sport of boxing. ‘The Merthyr Mexican’ has won the holy trinity of the British, Commonwealth and European titles. Gwynne can boast wins over Emiliano Marsili, Sean McComb, Jack O’Keeffe and Craig Woodruff.

The Welshman has fought just once since Vuong beat him; out-scoring journeyman Owen Durnan over six rounds in August. Vuong has been more active, building on the Gwynne win with a quality knockout of Jordan Flynn and a keep-busy decision over Reuquen Cona Facundo Arce.

This one is well-set. There is needle between the pair and 10 rounds of history between the ropes. Vuong needs a statement. Gwynne will bust a gut to make one of his own. Boxing, eh?

Vuong vs Gwynne Prediction

We know how each man will fight. Gwynne is a classic come-forward pressure fighter. Vuong evokes the hands-down Wincobank legends of old, with speed and reflex prized above all. The elder man is irrepressible. The younger is impetuous. But his defence is not quite impregnable, we saw that the first time.

I think the Flynn fight showed the blueprint for what Vuong is capable of. I believe the super welterweight limit sits well on a frame that is still growing. Gwynne has a year of limited activity behind him. Another year of natural aging in his arms and legs. Even if he had him winning the first fight, I don’t think you could argue he has improved since.

Vuong has though, in my opinion. Which is why I like ‘The One’ to pull away here, putting distance between himself and an opponent who gave him fits a year ago. Vuong is not a massive puncher, with four KOs in his nine victories. But I’ve got a feeling he’s sharper than Gwynne this time and that he’ll land too much leather here. Vuong by knockout at 11/4.
