Match Preview:
Ajax
Four matches, four losses. Inter, Marseille, Chelsea, and perhaps most worrying of all, Galatasaray, have all got the better of Ajax this season in the CL and there seems to be no way back from here.
But perhaps that shouldn't come as any big surprise when you consider that in the Eredivisie, they're no better off than sixth. Not only is this not a particularly competitive league but it's one that Ajax have won more often than anyone else and by some distance, so clearly, this isn't a vintage Ajax side.
A 2-1 defeat at the weekend to Excelsior, at home, means it's three matches without a win for them and even worse, it's just one win for them in their last nine!
Benfica
Four matches, four losses. Sounds familiar? Yes, that's because Benfica join Ajax as the only side yet to pick up a point.
Last time out Benfica were playing Bayer at home. We won on that match with our two card-related bets coming in at 16/5 and 23/10; but Benfica certainly didn't. But then again, a 1-0 loss at home to Bayer isn't out of line with the poor form they've shown in this competition so far.
They're still in a three-way battle in the Portuguese league and progressed in the Cup at the weekend. They beat Atletico, a team three divisions below them, just 2-0 and it was goalless at the break, I went to seew the match and can vouch for the fact they were disappointing once again.
Dodio Lukebakio, the speedy wide man, is now a long-term casualty and joins Bruma and Alexander Bah on the sidelines.
Ajax vs Benfica Predicted Lineups
- Ajax: Pasveer, Gaaei, Wijndal, Bass, Sutalo, Gloukh, Godts, Klassen, Mokio, Weghorst.
- Benfica: Trubin, Aursnes, Dahl, Otamendi, Araujo, Barrenchea, Sudakov, Rios, Pavlidis, Ivanovic, Prestianni/Schjelderlup.
Ajax vs Benfica Match Result Predictions & Odds
The only possible reason why Benfica are odds-on at 9/10 (52.6%) to win this match when they've so far lost all four is that the odds-compilers must think Ajax are a pretty terrible team, rather than one that isn't that bad but has just had bad results in this competition, which could well be the case with Benfica. Ajax are 11/4 and the draw is 13/5.
It's true that Ajax's form has been poor in other competitions as well, whereas Benfica have only really struggled in this one. But that's certainly not a reason enough to take that short price on Jose Mourinho's men, so we won't. And we certainly don't trust Ajax either, so even the Ajax/Draw Double Chance market at 9/10 is one to swerve.

Ajax vs Benfica Stats
- Neither side has recorded even a draw in the competition so far.
- Ajax have conceded 14 goals in four matches but scored just the once.
- Benfica are slightly better having scored twice but only conceded eight times.
Ajax vs Benfica Prediction - Both Teams to Score - 'No'
Ajax's stats in this competition look worse and worse the more you delve into them. They've scored just one goal in four matches, when they were awarded a penalty at Stamford Bridge, a match they lost 5-1 to Chelsea.
Benfica aren't much better, also scoring in just one match, when they were 2-0 up against Qarabag, only to go and lose 3-2. They failed to score against Chelsea, Newcastle and Bayer.
So, with both sides being 3/4 so far on the 'no' option for both teams to score, a price of 6/5 catches the eye fort a repeat.
I suppose you could take the view that both sides have been so poor at the back in this competition that they'll both inevitably concede at least once. But football doesn't always work like that, and the counterargument is that they haven't been much better going forward.
Given a 1-0 Benfica win or even 0-0 look lively runners, I think the 'no' option here is a good one at 6/5.
Most corners
Despite four losses apiece, Benfica are 3/4 and Ajax 2/4 for getting the most corners in their matches so far, so not much in it between them.
Benfica look a tad short to get more corners here at 8/13 in light of that so either the draw at 6/1 or Ajax to get the most corners at 15/8, both make appeal.
