Guatemala vs Suriname Prediction: Away side close to World Cup dream

Suriname know that a big win should secure their place at their very first World Cup as they travel to face Guatemala in the early hours of Wednesday morning (01:00 GMT). They currently sit top of the group but are level on points with Panama so it’s all to play for in this final round of fixtures.

Team News

Guatemala lost 3-2 to Panama last time out and manager Luis Fernando Tera could make a couple of changes to his starting XI. Nicholas Hagen, now of Columbus Crew is set to start in goal once again having nailed down the number one shirt, but Rudy Munoz should be rewarded for his goal off the bench with his first start in qualifying.

Meanwhile, Suriname beat El Salvador 4-0 last time out and I’d expect them to stick with the same XI. Captain Shaquille Pinas will play in defence along with Myenty Abena, Radinio Balker and Djavan Anderson. Richonell Magaret scored two goals and will start in attack, with Dhoraso Klas the one possible change after his goal from the bench.

This game shouldn’t be an entertaining one based on what we have seen so far. Guatemala had a thrilling 2-3 scoreline against Panama in their last outing, but prior to that, their previous four qualifiers had ended with under 2.5 goals. 

Meanwhile, Suriname have only seen over 2.5 goals in their two games against El Salvador, with the last meeting with the hosts ending 1-1, with Suriname equalising in the 94th minute of that one. The visitors need a win here, but I don’t think it will be a wide open encounter given they have only conceded three goals in this group so far.

I’d love for Suriname to get the job done and qualify for the World Cup in top spot, but I just can’t see it happening. Guatemala are a competitive outfit and I have concerns about Suriname in this group, despite the fact they sit top and remain unbeaten so far. 

They have only beaten El Salvador, both home and away, and they are the weakest nation in this group by some way. In two games against Panama and the aforementioned reverse fixture against Guatemala, they have drawn, and they only rescued a draw against this opponent in injury time. To give some balance, they also conceded against Panama late on when they could have beaten them, but I just think this is a really even encounter, so the draw appeals.
