Football Bet of the Day: Back Vucinic’s side to shut out the Faroes at 11/5

Football bet of the day

Is anyone else pleased that pesky football season is over for the time being and we can get back to the good old international break? Thursday night brings a fair mix of action, including a World Cup qualifier in Group L between the Faroe Islands and Montenegro in Torshavn (20:45 local, 19:45 BST).

Somewhat surprisingly, the Faroes go into this one ahead of their opponents in the standings thanks to their pair of wins over Gibraltar. But my Football Bet of the Day for Thursday won’t be suggesting that that hierarchy remains in place.

Football Bet of the Day - Thursday, October 9

  • Montenegro to beat Faroe Islands & BTTS - No @ 11/5

Faroe Islands vs Montenegro Odds

There's a degree of fence-sitting going on with the oddsmakers here, with Montenegro the favourites but available still at 23/20 with an implied probability of 46.5%.

It’s 13/5 for the Faroe Islands to come out of the game with a third win, with 11/5 available for the draw.
The Faroes had only ever recorded eight World Cup qualifying wins in their history coming into this campaign, and in no competition have they managed three victories.

But they have come a long way since they lost all 12 matches in qualifying for Euro 2008, conceding 43 goals and scoring just four.

They have already lost to Montenegro once in this World Cup season, but that was only as the result of Edvin Kuc’s 96th-minute winner.

Head coach Mirko Vucinic will be desperate for the visitors to repeat that triumph in Niksic, with their pedigree being greater than their hosts despite them never having qualified for a major tournament since independence.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • The Faroe Islands are looking to win a third group game for the first time ever
  • The two teams are sat on just four goals apiece from five matches so far in Group L
  • Stevan Jovetic's 37 international goals are almost as many as the Faroes' total of 45 in 85 World Cup qualifying matches through their history

World Cup Odds

In captain Stevan Jovetic, Vucinic has a player of star quality even if he is some years removed from the peak of his powers. And while the former Fiorentina and Manchester City star is likely to miss out on this occasion with a muscle injury, Montenegro have new talent waiting in the wings.

At 19, Vasilije Adzic has already shown that he can be a superstar on the big stage in recent weeks. It was his wonderful strike in stoppage time which decided a breathtaking seven-goal Derby d’Italia in the favour of Juventus against Inter in September.

If Vucinic can get a performance out of Atalanta’s Nikola Krstovic in the forward line, then that might be much of the battle in this game.

Last time out they were heavy 4-0 losers to Croatia, but they come into Thursday’s match as the side with the quality and experience.

As such, I can see them having enough to get a goal and then keeping the Faroes at bay. They were unconvincing in beating them back in March, but if anything that could put more emphasis on them delivering a showing of real quality this time around.

That 11/5 about a Montenegro win without conceding is far too tempting, with the 31.3% implied probability looking on the low side.
