Nap of the Day: Trilby can cap recent efforts with Ponte success

It's a busy start to the week for racing aficionados with no less than six meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland on Monday.

We go to Pontefract for the Nap of the Day - an appealingly-handicapped type who looks ready to strike once more.

The feature contest on the card at Pontefract is the Leslie Burton (Fisher) Handicap, a Class 3 event over six furlongs in which TRILBY is taken to score for trainer Sam England with Oisin Orr in the plate.

The Twilight Son gelding is a five-time winner on turf, with six more placed efforts from his 30 starts.

He has twice won from higher marks than his current perch of 77, with his most recent score coming at Beverley (5f, good) in April.

Encouragingly, three of those five wins have come on ground described as soft/heavy, ensuring he has no worries coming to Pontefract, where conditions are expected to be soft.

The five-year-old had a wind op in the summer and his two most recent runs have been encouraging.

He was only eighth at Doncaster (5f, soft) during the St Leger Festival but was closing all the way to the line and beaten just over a length passing the post.

He built on that over this trip at Haydock (6f, good to soft) at the end of last month, finishing third in this grade behind an unexposed and possibly well-handicapped rival from the William Haggas team in Realign.

Trilby turns up here from an unchanged mark and looks primed to get his head in front again soon.

He has yet to win at Pontefract but has twice made the frame here over 5f/6f in five starts. He was caught wider than ideal on his most recent visit in August and likely paid a tax for that late on.

He's got a nice draw in stall one here, potentially allowing Orr to slot him in just behind the early speed and hopefully produce a big challenge in the home straight.
