With seven wins and a draw from their opening eight games in all competitions, Hansi Flick’s side were starting to look like an unstoppable force, but they certainly met their match in midweek. Even without their regular front three of Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, holders PSG impressed in the Catalan capital in the Champions League, claiming a deserved 2-1 win.

For once, Pedri and Frenkie de Jong failed to take control of the game in midfield, while the hosts looked especially vulnerable on the flanks, with the French side’s two goals created by their outstanding full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes.

It’s not exactly a cause for panic in Barcelona. Flick’s squad had also been depleted by injuries, while they’d had the busier build-up to the game. This weekend’s trip to Seville will be their seventh match in 22 days.

However, the result was perhaps a timely reminder that Barça are not the complete package yet. Despite their domestic dominance since the coaching change in the summer of 2024, their flaws have often been exposed on big European nights. The PSG defeat may prove a useful learning experience ahead of the really crunch games later in the campaign.

They’ll fancy their chances of getting back to winning ways on Sunday. Barcelona have won their last seven games against a Sevilla side that is no longer the force of old. The two meetings last term served up 5-1 and 4-1 victories for Flick’s men.

Sevilla are under new management again, with Matías Almeyda taking charge in the summer. The Argentine has a really big job on his hands, having inherited a side that finished 17th last season.

The club’s financial predicament ensured he would not be heavily backed in the transfer market either. Sevilla sold their two star players Loïc Badé and Dodi Lukébakio, and recouped €55m in total, but were totally reliant on loans and free transfers for fresh arrivals.

Alexis Sánchez and César Azpilicueta were the most recognisable names in a largely experienced cast of fresh recruits. Overall, their business looks to have been solid in the circumstances, with Odysseas Vlachodimos, Gabriel Suazo, Alfon González and Batista Mendy already making positive contributions.

The Andalusians have started with three wins, three defeats and one draw from their opening seven fixtures in La Liga. All of those victories came on the road, with the most recent being a 1-0 triumph against Rayo Vallecano last weekend, which saw Akor Adams come off the bench to score a late winner.

The underlying data does suggest they still have some fairly significant issues, though. Sevilla have only created 5.2 xG so far, which is the joint-worst record in La Liga along with newly promoted Real Oviedo. Meanwhile, only five sides have allowed more xG than Almeyda’s side.

Sevilla vs Barcelona Odds

Despite their selection issues, Barcelona start as the 3/5 favourites to win this game. You can back the Draw at 10/3, while Sevilla are on offer at 4/1 to claim their first victory over this opposition since a Copa del Rey first-leg triumph nearly five years ago.

Sevilla or Draw is priced at 13/10 in the Double Chance market. You can also back the hosts to win either half at 6/4, while they’re available at 13/8 to score over 1.5 goals.

If you’re expecting Barça to cope just fine with Yamal and Raphinha, you can back the visitors to score over 2.5 goals at 11/8. Barcelona to win and Both teams to score is priced at 8/5, a winning bet in four of their last eight games in all competitions.

Having only come on in the 72nd minute against PSG, Lewandowski should be fresh and may be the best option in the Goalscorer markets. He’s priced at 7/2 to score first, and 9/10 to score anytime.

You can also back Ferran Torres to get on the scoresheet at 6/5, while Marcus Rashford is priced at 13/10, although it’s possible only one of those two will start the match.

From a home perspective, Alexis is on offer at 12/5 to strike against his former employers, while Adams is priced at 15/8 to score his second goal in as many games.

Team News

Alfon and Tanguy Nianzou are the two definite injury absentees for Sevilla heading into this game. They also have doubts over Joan Jordan and Adnan Januzaj.

Adams is pushing for a starting role up top, after netting his first goal in La Liga last weekend, while 36-year-old Alexis is in contention to start against his former club.

As for Barcelona, they have some significant injury problems heading into this. They were already going to be without the injured Raphinha, Fermín López and Gavi. A fresh setback for Lamine Yamal also means the teenager will play no part at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. That could serve up another opportunity for Roony Bardghji on the right flank, while Robert Lewandowski is expected to rotate in up front.

At the other end of the pitch, Wojciech Szczęsny will continue in goal, with Marc-André ter Stegen and Joan García still sidelined. Alejandro Balde could return at left-back, having recently recovered from an injury.

Bet Builder - Under 3.5 goals & Sevilla over 2.5 corners @ 7/5

We’ve seen Barcelona cope really well without Yamal over the past few weeks, but they’ve still been able to count on Raphinha’s services over that period. This will be the first match of the campaign that sees neither feature in any capacity, and with Rashford also perhaps due a rest, their attacking threat will be significantly depleted.

Sevilla are by no means a great side, but they’ve got energy in midfield and enough about them to at least make this difficult for an under-strength Barça. I can see the hosts enjoying periods of superiority.

Flick’s side have conceded 4.5 corners per game on average on their travels this term in La Liga. With the visitors unlikely to hit top gear in the final third, I’m using the Bet Builder to back Under 3.5 goals and Sevilla to win over 2.5 corners at 7/5.

1st Half Draw No Bet - Sevilla @ 2/1

Barcelona have been slow to get out of the blocks in some of their recent games, particularly away from home. They were trailing at the break on trips to newly promoted duo Levante and Real Oviedo, before coming back to win. The Catalans also fell behind in the first half at home to Real Sociedad last weekend, before fighting back to win 2-1.

Flick has often opted to leave key players on the bench, and use them later on against tiring opponents. After such a tough 90 minutes in midweek, it’s possible we could see something similar here, and I’m backing Sevilla in the First Half Draw No Bet market at 2/1.
