Football bet of the day

It might be the international break, but we’ve got plenty of club action going on in midweek. On Tuesday, we have EFL Trophy action to look forward to as clubs in League 1 and League 2 battle it out, along with a handful of U21 teams from the Premier League.

Below you will find my Football Bet of the Day as we search for a winner.

Football Bet Of The Day - Tuesday, September 2

  • Crewe vs Chesterfield - Over 3.5 goals @ 9/4

Today's Football Fixtures

Crewe Alexandra had made a bright start to the season under Lee Bell, winning their first four league matches to go top. However, they’ve lost their last two league fixtures, as Swindon came to town and scored three against them at the weekend, meaning that Bell will want his side to find some form on Tuesday night.

They welcome Chesterfield to the Mornflake Stadium (19:00), as they look to get off to a winning start in Group H of the EFL Trophy. Although we can expect rotation from both teams, I think goals is the way to go looking at this fixture. Three of Crewe’s seven matches so far have seen over 3.5 goals and they’ve scored plenty, hitting 10 and conceded six in League 2 so far.

However, Paul Cook’s Chesterfield are an incredibly strong side at this level and rightfully one of the favourites for promotion. They currently sit second having won four, drawn one and lost one in the league with the likes of Will Grigg, John Fleck and Liam Mandeville all named on the bench for the league game against Crawley - such is the strength of their squad.

That 2-2 draw stopped them hitting top spot, but they’ve carried an obvious goalscoring threat throughout the campaign so far, with goals coming from all over the park. I’d expect Grigg to start this one and he has been a reliable goalscorer throughout his career, so I think he can find a goal or two in this competition.

Both of these teams have carried a significant amount of threat this term and given that I don’t want to pick a winner for this fixture, I think goals is certainly the way to go. We’re getting decent value on over 3.5, which has come in during three of the last four Chesterfield matches.

Both teams have scored in the last four Spireites fixtures as well, so their defence isn’t as solid as you might expect. Crewe will pose a threat, so let’s go for goals as we try and find a winner on Tuesday night. Over 3.5 goals in Crewe v Chesterfield, at 9/4, is Tuesday’s Football Bet of the Day.
