Yes! The EFL is back and so am I. It feels like a long time ago since my last BTTS column, but that's what the off-season will do. No matter, as League 1 and League 2 get underway this weekend to get 2025/26 up and running.

That can only mean one thing, my boosted accas are back. I've scouted the roster of matches in both divisions across Saturday to pick out my four selections for the first boost of the season. The traders have kindly bumped this one up from 9/1 to 10/1, so scroll down and check out my BTTS Tips for Saturday, August 2, which come exclusively from the third tier.

BTTS Yes in Cardiff City vs Peterborough United @ 4/6

Following their relegation from the Championship in 2024/25, Cardiff City have ambitions to get back to the second tier at the first attempt in League 1. They have appointed an exciting manager in Brian Barry-Murphy, who has joined from Manchester City's academy.

He's diving into a tough job not without its pressures. There will be a lot of expectation on his shoulders but at the moment it is looking difficult as the Bluebirds are yet to make a signing.

Peterborough United endured a huge drop off last term as key player exits saw the Posh struggle, finishing 18th and just five points clear of the relegation zone. Many are tipping the Boro to have another troublesome campaign, with more star personnel having departed the Posh this summer.

This is an interesting opening game for both teams, and one that I think can deliver goals. Last season, no team was involved in more away games that featured goals at both ends of the pitch than Posh, with 74% (17/23) of their fixtures including BTTS.

They ranked second in the BTTS (home and away) in League 1 with 70% (32/46) of their matches seeing both teams get on the scoresheet. Peterborough were also the side with the worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 81 goals last term.

BTTS Yes in Huddersfield Town vs Leyton Orient @ 8/11

Cardiff need only look at Huddersfield Town to understand how difficult getting out of League 1 straight away is. The Terriers were one of the favourites last year but ended the campaign in 10th.

They have switched up their approach this summer, with Lee Grant coming in as manager. He is an unknown, like Barry-Murphy, but he is an exciting young coach looking to build his reputation in the game.

He has made some impressive signings so far, notably Alfie May from Birmingham City, who is the closest thing to guaranteed goals in this division. The 32-year-old striker has 82 goals in 172 appearances at this level.

The Terriers start their season with a home clash against Leyton Orient, who were play-off semi-finalists last term. Both teams ranked in the bottom six for games that featured BTTS last year but with the attacking quality they both possess, I think goals could be in store on Saturday.

The O's came out on top here in May, cruising to a 4-1 victory, and I believe we will see both teams get on the scoresheet at the Accu Stadium this time around.

BTTS Yes in Bradford City vs Wycombe Wanderers @ 10/11

Newly-promoted Bradford City face a tough test on their return to League 1, in the form of Wycombe Wanderers, who finished in the play-offs in 2024/25. The Chairboys had a bitter ending to the season under Mike Dodds, having been firmly in the automatic promotion race under his predecessor Matt Bloomfield, now in charge of Luton Town.

Wycombe will hope for greater success this term and they have been very busy in the transfer market. The Chairboys ranked 17th in League 1 for BTTS last year but Bradford ranked sixth in League 2 for this market with 52% (24/46) of their matches producing goals at both ends.

The Bantams scored 64 goals in League 2 in 2024/25, while Wycombe bagged 70 in the third tier. All evidence suggests this clash won't be short of goals.

Today's Football Fixtures

BTTS No in Wigan Athletic vs Northampton Town @ 4/5

Northampton Town are being tipped by many for relegation this season. They finished 19th last time out, just five points above the drop zone, and another nine months of struggle looks in store for them.

They travel to Wigan Athletic on Saturday, who finished 15th, but also boasted one of the best defensive records in League 1 with 42 goals conceded in 46 games. The Latics kept eight clean sheets on home soil, while just 39% (9/23) of their clashes at The Brick Community Stadium saw both teams find the net.

This will be a tough trip for Northampton to start the campaign with, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Wigan begin the campaign with a shutout.
