Legia Warsaw vs Banik Ostrava Prediction: Finely poised affair could be cagey

Legia Warsaw have work to do as they welcome Banik Ostrava to the Polish Army Stadium on Thursday night (20:00). The first leg of this Europa League second round qualifier finished 2-2, with a late equaliser from Jean-Pierre Nsame sparing the Polish team’s blushes.
The Legionisci had a fruitful continental campaign last season, reaching the quarter-final stage of the Conference League. This season, Warsaw are aiming to reach the group stage of Europe’s secondary competition for the first time since the 2021/22 campaign.
Banik have only progressed further than this stage once in the Europa League era, when they beat FC MIT Georgia 6-0 over two legs back in 2009.
Here are my Legia Warsaw vs Banik Ostrava predictions ahead of this crucial tie.
Legia Warsaw vs Banik Ostrava Betting Tips
Team News
Both sides could well name similar sides to their first leg encounter, with each manager boasting almost a full complement ahead of this all-to-play-for affair.
Legia boss Edward Iordanescu does rotate from time to time. Former Wolves man Ruben Vinagre could make way for Patrick Kun, who started against FC Aktobe in the last round. Marco Burch and Claude Goncalves are options in the middle if Iodranescu rests the likes of Juergen Elitim and Rafal Augustyniak.
Banik generally stick to Tomas Rigo and Jiri Boula as a midfield pairing. But manager David Buchta has options to flank them.
In the first leg David Buchta and Daniel Holzer provided attacking width behind an out-and-out front three. But Banik do sometimes play with wing backs in that midfield four, with Alexander Munksgaard and Patrick Kpozo on the flanks. They may like the latter option going into an away game with tough opposition.
Legia Warsaw vs Banik Ostrava Odds
Legia are 4/7 to secure the win they need to progress to the third qualifying round in normal time. Banik are a live underdog given their display in the first game, but 4/1 reflects how tricky this task is away from home. The draw in 90 minutes is priced up at 13/5, though the tie will be settled via extra time and penalties if that occurs.
Legia are 2/7 to win the overall tie should that happen, while Banik are 5/2 to do so.
Under 1.5 goals @ 11/4
A curious choice given the fact that these teams shared four goals in their previous meeting. But I think this will be a very different game. Ostrava are unlikely to be as brave on away soil. Legia will attack, but without reckless abandon.
This is the nature of a tie on a knife edge. Ostrava will be looking for something on the break. Legia will be careful not to over-commit. I think that a precarious rhythm to the match could keep the score low. I reckon a goal settles this either way.

Correct Score - Legia Warsaw to win 1-0 @ 11/2
If you want to be a little braver, a nice variation of the above can get you a better price. Back the favourites to win by my predicted narrow scoreline and 11/2 is your price.
Legia won by this scoreline in each leg of their first-round qualifier with Kazakhstan’s FC Aktobe. The first leg with Banik saw Nsame pop up with the equaliser, a player who netted just twice on loan at St Gallen for the second half of last season. Their first goal came courtesy of Bartosz Kaputska, who upped his goal output to 12 last season.
Frontman Ilya Shkurin netted four from 16 games in all competitions last term. Multi-functional wing-back-cum-winger Ryoya Morishita struck 12 in 41 outings last term. Kacper Chodyna hit six from the other flank in 45 appearances. There are goals in this side, but I think with the inherent jeopardy of knockout football compared to the freedom usually afforded in a league tie, this match is set for 1-0 at the finish.
