Flamengo vs Bayern Munich was a last-16 clash that many of us expected when the groups were drawn, but it hasn’t come about in the way we thought it would. Flamengo won Group D ahead of Chelsea while Bayern fell to second place in Group E after a loss to Benfica, so this clash could be closer than many expect it to be.

Filipe Luis rotated for his team against Los Angeles with qualification already secured, so we can expect the first-team players to return here. That means Gerson, Erick Pulgar and Jorginho should start in midfield, while Gonzalo Plata is set to lead the line having bagged two assists against Chelsea.

Ayrton Lucas and Leo Pereira should return in the back four while all eyes will be on star man Giorgian de Arrascaeta who has 19 goal contributions in 29 matches so far this season.

Vincent Kompany also chose to rotate for that final group game against Benfica, so Harry Kane, Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise should come back into the forward line. Jonathan Tah should return to the back four to partner Josip Stanisic at centre-back, while Jamal Musiala could get his first start of the tournament in the number 10 role.

Kim Min-jae, Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito all remain out of action, while Eric Dier is not in their CWC squad, so options are limited at the back.

Bayern Munich are the 8/11 favourites to win this game, giving them an implied win probability of 58%. Meanwhile Flamengo are available to back at 4/1, and a draw is priced up at 3/1. 

Over 2.5 goals is 4/6, BTTS is the same price and Kane is the favourite to score first at 7/2. 

Bayern Munich to win @ 8/11

Bayern had a strange 10-0 win over Auckland City and then beat Boca Juniors 2-1 in their group, before they lost to Benfica to finish second. However, if they hadn’t rotated, they should have got three wins from three and that’s what I’m banking on here. 

That loss was also the first time they have lost a Fifa Club World Cup match, but there’s a few good omens. They haven’t lost back-to-back games since Kompany got the job in May 2024, while they have only failed to score in consecutive matches once in the last 10 years according to Opta. 

As a result, despite Flamengo’s strong showing against Chelsea and the strength of the Brazilian teams in general, I am going to side with the German giants to get the job done in 90 minutes. With the quality on show, they should be able to brush Flamengo to one side.

Michael Olise to score and assist a goal @ 11/1

Olise has rapidly developed into one of the finest wingers in world football since his move to Bayern Munich, and I’m excited to see what he can do in the rest of this tournament. 

He was by far their best player in that group stage, scoring three goals (joint top-scorer with Musiala), getting two assists, and having more shots (eight) and more shots on target (five), than any other Bayern player. He also led the way for duels won, proving his credentials on the ball, and I think he could have a big say in this tie. I like the odds on offer for him to score and get an assist against Flamengo.
