Lucky 15 Tips: No Nay Never colt looks to lose maiden tag

Day Three on the Roodee - and it's the Chester Cup no less, established way back in 1824. Several horses have won it twice - including my all-time favourite racehorse Sea Pigeon, gelded son of the mighty Sea Bird, a sleek, gorgeous, dark destroyer. What a turn of foot he had - won a couple of Champion Hurdles too, just for good measure. A giant in the sport.
Action starts at 13:30, seven fabulous contests, and an absolute pleasure to be involved, as always. Have we got a potential Sea Pigeon in today's field? Wouldn't that be something ...

Chester
14:05 - Ammes @ 2/1
A three-year-old maiden, over a trip just in excess of 1m 4f. Decent yards oppose, and it looks competitive.
Our choice is trained at HQ by James Owen - a No Nay Never colt with two very promising runs under his belt. Ammes debuted in a Chelmsford novice (10f) last November and ran very well, beaten just 2l, fading late.
On seasonal reappearance at Kempton last month in a similar heat he improved upon that with a second, 1.75l behind the 92-rated Ernst Blofeld from Team Gosden. He was running-on nicely on that occasion, again over 10f, so the step up in trip should be no problem.
No Nay Never was all about speed but our selection's dam Crystal Diamond was a Listed-class stayer so I'm very hopeful that this progressive type can take another step forward at this distance, on career start number three. Fascinating affair, with some very promising types on show.
14:35 - Bolster @ 11/2
Karl Burke is a considerable force in the game, and the North Yorkshire trainer fields five-year-old Bolster in this, for prolific patron Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum.
He's got a pound or two to find on official marks in this G2, but his form hit new heights last autumn and I'm sure Karl has chosen this seasonal reappearance carefully.
Around 10f definitely looks to be his trip and though he's a newcomer to the delights of Chester he's won at both Epsom and Pontefract, quirky left-hand tracks that demand athleticism and an appetite for whatever the contours have in store.
Looks a bit of value to me in a cracking renewal of the Huxley.
15:05 - Caballo De Mar @ 6/1
Chester Cup time - and a selection who could hardly be in better order.
Caballo De Mar has developed a terrific liking for Southwell's Tapeta surface, running-up a four-timer from October through to April at around 1m 6f - 2m.
If you stay 2m at Southwell you're very probably going to get further elsewhere, so this marathon 2m 2.5f trip should be within the scope of George Scott's four-year-old Phoenix Of Spain gelding.
He contested his first handicap off 65 last July and comes here rated 88 - quite a feat, improvement-wise. He scored readily off 85 last time in Nottinghamshire and surely won't fail for having too much on his plate in that regard. Feels like we've yet to get to the bottom of him - smashing chance.
15:40 - Take Heart @ 5/1
I give best to few in my admiration for Irish jockey Billy Lee. He's got a couple of booked rides on the card but the one that interests me is this Johnny Murtagh-trained five-year-old Dark Angel gelding, Take Heart.
This one won at Goodwood last term off 95 - the £50k Chesterfield Cup at around this trip, and he's had a couple of respectable sighters so far this campaign, in the Irish Lincoln and a decent Cork handicap.
He lines up here off 98, and should be cherry-ripe. Goodwood is a right-hand test but is another venue like Chester that demands a horse with a willing attitude to cope with whatever is thrown at it given the less-than-routine lay of the land, shall we say.
Connections wouldn't surely make the trip without plenty of hope and I like very much the booking of WJ Lee, who has sat on his back a couple of times previously on the racecourse, including in fact on debut in a Dundalk maiden.
The experience of both horse (having his 15th start) and rider can pay dividends this afternoon, fingers crossed.
This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today's selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £830 for your total £7.50 stake.
