Horse Racing Tips: Regal can rule at Ayr

Ayr racecourse

There are five race meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland on Monday and with the National Hunt season finishing on Saturday, Flat racing dominates proceedings. Ayr gets us underway, before the afternoon action continues at Lingfield. Windsor, Naas and Wolverhampton host evening fixtures that should be fiercely competitive.

We have three strong fancies to follow and they include an ex-William Haggas horse that remains lightly raced and could be worth following on debut for David O’Meara.

Today's Horse Races

14:45 Lingfield - State Flag @ 9/2

A field of seven has been declared for this 7f handicap and Tom Ward’s filly STATE FLAG could be the one to side with.

The four-year-old won a maiden over course and distance in May last year, with the runner-up from that race going on to win twice since.

Ward’s charge was a tad disappointing on handicap debut at Sandown in June, finishing seventh in a nine-runner contest, but produced a better display when fourth by two lengths at Newbury in July.

State Flag returned to winning ways at Newbury next time out over 7f off a mark of 73 and if producing a similar level of performance here at Lingfield, a big run could well be on the cards.

State Flag’s last outing resulted in a fifth-placed finish at Lingfield and having been dropped 1lb by the handicapper, there’s every reason to believe she’ll be sharp enough to go close on season debut.

15:30 Ayr - Sea Regal @ 3/1

David O’Meara’s SEA REGAL remains lightly raced, especially in handicap company, and she makes her debut for the yard at Ayr.

You can’t knock the form of her third on debut at Southwell in December 2023, as it was the 1000 Guineas winner Elmalka that got the better of her that day.

Stepping up to 1m2f at Ripon next time, she duly obliged and showed a good attitude to come out on top.

Sea Regal disappointed a couple of times after that but returned to form when second by a nose in a handicap at Sandown back in August.

Racing off a 2lb higher mark now, she remains lightly raced in this sphere and the return to 1m2f could well be in her favour.

18:30 Windsor - Lilly Lux @ 12/1

French import LILLY LUX makes her British debut at Windsor and while it’s hard to know how to quantify the form, a rating of 77 doesn’t look too outrageous.

George Baker’s filly won twice on the all-weather in France and was particularly impressive at Pornichet-La Baule when last seen. That January success came over 1m4f and, if the two-furlong shorter trip for this race proves to be no problem, she’s entitled to run well.

One potential cause for concern is her handicap form but she remains very lightly raced and potentially unexposed in this sphere.

Baker has been among the winners recently and this filly should be capable of winning races in Britain.
