Lucky 15 Tips: Four tips to follow on Sunday

With the National Hunt season coming to an end on Saturday, we have just the two Flat meetings to look forward to on Sunday, but there’s some strong handicap action on offer. Wetherby gets the action underway in the afternoon and Southwell provides the all-weather entertainment into the evening, with some respectable prize money on offer.

We’ve picked out four horses that could be worth following across the day and they can be combined to form a Lucky 15. They include a handicap debutante for John & Thady Gosden, who could well be on a lenient mark at Southwell.

Wetherby 14:30 - Coma Cluster @ 5/4

This could be a big year for George Boughey and his filly COMA CLUSTER looks well set to get off the mark here. Her first couple of starts came for Sir Michael Stoute and she was comfortably beaten in a Doncaster maiden and a Yarmouth novice.

Making her handicap debut on her second start for this yard, she produced a much improved display to finish second by a narrow margin at Nottingham earlier this month. She kept on well despite not having the pace to catch the winner but the step up to 1m2f should help.

We haven’t seen the best of this filly yet and although the handicapper has put her up 3lb since, there should be loads of improvement still in the tank.

Jockey Billy Loughnane is operating at a very healthy strike-rate of 24 per cent in the last fortnight and victory could be on the cards.

Southwell 16:15 - Overture @ 5/4

Middle-distance handicaps have been the making of OVERTURE and the handicapper may not have this filly in their grasp just yet. She was particularly progressive towards the back end of last season, completing a four-timer, and can pick up where she left off here.

Her penultimate success was one of her most impressive and it came here over a furlong shorter back in August. By Derby winner New Approach, 1m4f should be no issue on that side of the family and the winning streak is expected to continue.

Sir Mark Prescott’s four-year-old will probably need to improve again, as she was a narrow winner at Yarmouth last time out and a 7lb rise is a significant one.

That being said, she should be capable of winning again before the handicapper catches up.

Southwell 16:45 - Morrophore @ 7/4

MORROPHORE produced a reasonable performance when third on debut in a novice at Newmarket over a mile in June, which made her below-par run at Yarmouth before that all the more baffling.

John & Thady Gosden’s filly made no mistake when upped to an extended 1m1f at Wolverhampton after that though, and she was an impressive winner on the day. The form has taken a couple of knocks but that might not make a difference here.

She was held up in the early stages of the race, before going into midfield and making stealthy progress from there.

Putting the race to bed quickly after that, an opening handicap mark of 87 could prove to be lenient.

Southwell 17:45 - Mr Fantastic @ 14/1

Karl Burke’s hugely unexposed handicap debutant MR FANTASTIC could be worth keeping an eye on in this race, as there could be any amount of improvement still to come.

He made the frame in his first two three starts and managed to get off the mark in good style at Newcastle over 7f in September. Although none of the beaten horses have won since, a couple have run well subsequently.

Burke’s gelding was thrown into a valuable sales race at York and he got off to an awkward start that day and was far too keen in the early stages.

Perhaps the return to 6f will help on that front and this race looks much easier.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
