US Horse Racing Tips - Wednesday, April 2

19:07 Mahoning Valley (Race 5) – Watchoutforweaver @ SP

The standard setter at this low level is El Marro (5). He ran a length second just ahead of Play Ball (9) in a similar event to this one last month. A repeat of that effort is likely enough to get him on the podium. He does look vulnerable to a class dropper. One such runner is Watchoutforweaver (2). He has ran in a trio of open claimers or allowance events at this meet. The last two were over a mile. He has form sprinting. Luis Rivera should be able to keep him within striking distance early on. His trainer is having another super meet.

Beat the Dealer (6) ran poorly behind El Marro (5) last time. He has a chance off his third in a higher priced claimer in February. Marvin's Express (1) and Honor the D (8) also have something to find with El Marro (5). The first named did take a step in the right direction last time.

Spin Doctor (4) gets some class relief after running evenly in a deeper claimer. Bad Boy Boogie (7) was entitled to have needed his last run after so long away. He has speed in a pretty paceless race. If there was going to be an upset, he may be the runner to do it.

19:07 Mahoning Valley (Race 5) - Winner Watchoutforweaver

Odds correct at time of publishing.

19:25 Tampa Bay Downs (Race 5) – Act Violently @ SP

Some of the quality in this race may not get in. The likes of Crafty Collector (13) are a reserve for this. She is halved in claiming price after running third in a $32,000 maiden claimer last month. Presuming she doesn’t get in, French Benefits (9) is likely to be a clear cut favourite.

She set quick fractions when beaten by a nose in a similar race to this one in February. A repeat of that run may be good enough. She is likely to have company on the front end from the likes of Tap Bonnet (10). Her best effort to date came when runner up on the dirt last time. She did shape well on her only start on the turf.

Secret Victory (3) has been running in sprints on the dirt. She ran well for a long way in a much better maiden on the grass here in December. She’s another who may add to the speed mix. It could lead to a scenario where a patiently ridden filly runs big.

Dreaming of Nana (7) got behind and stayed on late on her career debut. She has the pedigree that suggests a mile and turf may be her thing. Likewise stablemates Willing to Try (2) and Act Violently (4). The last named gets a massive jockey switch to Samuel Marin. Her dam was best on the turf. That’s ground for thinking she will leave the form of her two dirt runs behind.

19:25 Tampa Bay Downs (Race 5) - Winner Act Violently

Odds correct at time of publishing.

22:24 Will Rogers Downs (Race 8) – Maggie d'Cause @ SP

The nightcap is an open looking affair. Over half this field ran in a race at this level but over five and a half furlongs on 18 March. Our Bet (6) caused an upset outfinishing All Aflutter (8) and Oh Niki (9). The extra ground here will suit. Maybe the runner to take out of the race is Maggie d'Cause (10) who finished a close up fourth. She was made odds on favourite off some of her efforts in better races at Remington last year.

There is a chance she needed that run to put her spot on. She did improve markedly second time back after her last lay off. Her trainer is starting to heat up, winning with two runners on Monday.

The winner of this doesn’t have to come from that 18 March race. The two mares that may be most likely are Gypsy Rose (5) and When Judy Calls (7). The first named was in too deep on her seasonal return. She has done some of her best work on this track.

When Judy Calls (7) goes for an in form trainer, very capable of bringing a runner back fit after a lay off. She was far from disgraced in a pair of much better races when last seen out.

22:24 Will Rogers Downs (Race 8) - Winner Maggie d'Cause

Odds correct at time of publishing.
