Twig Grand National Odds 2025: Ultima runner-up to go well at Aintree?

Trainer Ben Pauling had horses needing plenty of defections to make the field, and his first one is in as Twig has been added to the field as of Monday morning.

Twig has plenty of fans but I wonder if everyone is just looking back through rose-tinted spectacles at his performance in the 2024 Ultima.

Coming home second to Chianti Classico at the Festival as a 28/1 shot is nothing at all to be ashamed of, and he beat several genuine Grand National contenders that day in Meetingofthewaters, Monbeg Genius and Stumptown. But the big question is: what has this horse done since?

A solid - if unspectacular - run at the 2024 Aintree Grand National Festival saw him finish fifth in the Class I Freebooter Handicap Chase as he rounded off a good end to his '23/24 campaign. His start to this term wasn’t exactly poor either, finishing behind Beacon Edge at Wetherby, but since then not much has gone right.

He was in the mix at Wetherby but blundered three out before being pulled up before the last. Next up was a trip to Cheltenham in January but Twig made no impression whatsoever and significantly weakened in the final 100 yards.

His connections chose to swerve the Festival in March and instead found a soft landing spot up at Doncaster so as not to affect his mark. Finishing seventh of eight who crossed the line and nowhere near the leaders is certainly not great form.

The going on both of those occasions was not good and that is somewhat of a mitigating factor. Still, if you are going to back him with any sort of confidence, you have to think that the Twig of last spring is the real version and one who could place on Saturday.
