Duffle Coat Grand National Odds 2025: Is this Irish horse a quiet contender?

After a mass of defections, the 34th and final spot in the Grand National as of the five-day confirmation period is Duffle Coat for trainer Gordon Elliott.

Talk about things going to the wire. Duffle Coat saw his official mark unchanged on Monday whereas Shakem Up’Arry (2lbs) and Roi Mage (5lbs) saw drops, which allowed this horse to win the tie-breaker for that final spot in the field as of the five-day confirmation stage.

This Irish horse had spent his entire career on the Emerald Isle until a couple of trips over the water early in 2025. This started with a fourth-place finish at Ayr in a Class III. On paper, that might seem like a solid result but there were only four runners and he ended up 10 lengths behind third place. Not ideal.

Next time out, though, was far more encouraging at Cheltenham, where he was still in contention when he was brought down by another horse. This time, Duffle Coat looked to have more energy in his legs.

2024 was a strong year with several races in which he placed, including a Class I victory at Ballinrobe despite going off at 14/1. That win was preceded by a plethora of runner-up finishes, which seemed to indicate there was a decent stayer here.

Duffle Coat, however, will be one of the rank outsiders for Saturday’s Aintree Grand National. He hasn’t really faced the type of quality that he’ll be up against at the weekend, and with only one win to his name since his 2020 debut season it would be quite the stretch to expect him to be there or thereabouts when the horses are coming to the line.
