Broadway boy

If you are an avid watcher of Horse Racing, a few months ago you’d have certainly thought that Broadway Boy rather than Beauport would be the top challenger from the yard of Nigel Twiston-Davies. But two poor runs have seen that expectation well and truly shift away from the horse we are talking about here. Is that a sign that punters should follow?

We investigate Broadway Boy’s Grand National Odds and why he’s been on the drift for a few months now after being thought of a genuine contender earlier in the season…

When a yard has two or more horses entered into a big race, one of the first things to look for is who the number-one jockey decides to ride. News came out last week that Sam Twiston-Davies has chosen Beauport to pilot rather than Broadway Boy, a horse he’s ridden in his past seven starts. That says plenty.

Last time out, hopes were high that this seven-year-old could go well in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival. Sadly for his supporters and backers, he was pulled up four out and just didn’t seem to have that extra gear that had been there throughout 2023 and 2024.

He opened 2025 really disappointingly, finishing fourth of five when going off as an odds-on favourite at Cheltenham. Post-race health checks noted that there was slight mucus in his lungs and he didn’t seem to be jumping well.

Some treatment for his knees and a bit of time off was the obvious plan of action ahead of the Festival and most wrote off that poor outing as the horse was just feeling under the weather. Following that up with another dud performance, however, is of far more concern.

This was a multiple Class I winner back in 2023, so there is clearly something there. Even last year finishing second to Kandoo Kid at the Newbury Gold Cup wasn’t a bad performance at all.

So for those looking to bet on Broadway Boy to win (or place) in the Grand National this Saturday, I think it comes down to whether you feel he’s fully healthy and if those two poor runs earlier this year can be written off or not. If you think that they can, then an each-way play at long odds is certainly playable.
