Iroko

JP McManus may have a great shot with the ever-improving Perceval Legallois, but the horse that he’s been targeting for the Grand National all season long is Iroko and the seven-year-old looks set to go off as one of the betting favourites at Aintree this Saturday.

We take a look at the Grand National Odds of Iroko and whether he’s the horse to back for the big race at the weekend…

Ireland has dominated jumps racing in the UK for quite a while now but if you want the right patriotic horse to back then leading the charge for those trained in this country will be Iroko.

This young horse may actually be French but he’s based at the stables of Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero in Malpas, which is in Cheshire, and ever since running Inothewayurthinkin close at Aintree in the Mildway a year ago the target has very much been getting him ready for a tilt at the Grand National.

The training duo have never even sent out a horse for the race, yet they go to Aintree with one of the betting favourites. It is the opportunity of a lifetime and the prep work seems to have gone well. Fourth at Cheltenham Trials day might not have been the perfect result but it was another solid run and he wasn’t outclassed by the odds-on favourite at Kelso last time out, coming down just two-and-a-half lengths behind the eventual winner that day, Grey Dawning.

Betfred ambassador Jonjo O’Neill has been tabbed to ride coming off a very strong Cheltenham Festival where he famously won on 100/1 shot Poniros in the Triumph Hurdle. The jockey has a history with the horse, having ridden him in his past seven races, and that combination could well prove fruitful on Saturday.

Noble Yeats won as a seven-year-old in 2022 but that was the first time since 1940 that a horse so young had been victorious at the Grand National. In recent years, though, younger horses have been proving stronger as you have to go back to 2014 and Pineau De Re for the last time a winner was 10 or older.

Iroko has plenty of momentum and the only thing we can’t be sure about is stamina. Yet he went 3m 210yards at Aintree for the Mildmay and kept Inothewayurthinkin more than honest, and that horse likely would’ve been the shortest-priced starter in Grand National history.

If you root for the little guy and the small yard then Iroko is the one for you. Has every chance.
