21:23 Sunland Park (Race 8) - B Bold Charlie @ SP
With the exception of two new faces, this is a re-run of a stake run over a mile on 16 February. Mojica (1) was a wide margin wire to winner of a maiden over six furlongs previously. He managed to handle the extra distance with his rider rationing his speed on the front end. There is a good chance he makes the lead again. That said, some of his old rivals may be ridden more aggressively early and My Peaches Q (2) has decent sprint pace. He is a stablemate of Mojica (1) who broke his maiden in January.
Stand Up Guy (4) and Holy Hank (6) stalked Mojica (1) in that stake. The pair didn’t make any inroads in the straight. In fact, the winner drew further away from them. The only runner who made up any ground was B Bold Charlie (3). You can downgrade his effort a little, sat off a duel. That said, he may get the same set up here. He took a while for his jockey to organise him in the stretch. When he did, he closed fast to miss by less than a length. A rider change to Alfredo Juarez Jr. and another half a furlong to run are reasons for thinking he will reverse the form.
Short Round Bound (5) broke his maiden over six furlongs last time out in January. He did finish second to the selection in a stake over a mile at Zia Park in December. He’s not out of this.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
22:15 Sunland Park (Race 10) - Sensuous Woman @ SP
Forty Five (2) is the clearly filly to beat. She looked much improved stepping up to a mile for the first time. Last month, she made the lead and wired a similar stakes field to this one by almost seven lengths. There may be more competition for the lead here but looks the type who can run her race ridden more patiently.
Of those that finished well beaten by Forty Five (2) last time, some have upside. Her stablemate Thatsaterriblidea (8) did the best of them. Her rider made a big and premature move down the back straight to challenge the winner. That effort took its toll late on. The Smooch (3) didn’t break well and never ran to her stakes winning form of November.
The unbeaten Sensuous Woman (4) has two worries about her but still may be worth siding with. She comes back only eight days after an impressive score against winners. That and her debut victory came sprinting. She shapes like more ground will suit and may be upstage standard setter Forty Five (2) and all.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
22:40 Sunland Park (Race 11) - Sapello Sonrisa @ SP
Quite a few of these fillies ran in a maiden over course and distance on 7 March. The winner was a debutante but the runner up had decent form going into that race. Unbridled Beauty (1) and Bonified Wildcat (3) did the best of these running third and fourth respectively. The rail drawn runner will likely be a factor from the outset. Bonified Wildcat (3) can contend if her rider can work out a trip from her draw.
Unbridled Beauty (1) and Bonified Wildcat (3) look obvious for the shortlist but there are others from that race who may run better. Hush's Ghost (9) was right there until late on. She may improve but maybe not as much as second time starter. Sapello Sonrisa (6). That said, she will have to improve massively off her debut as she ended up well beaten. She was off slowly but did show plenty of speed to get into contention. Alejandro Medellin let her come home in her own time once it was clear she wasn’t going to figure in the finish. He stays with her despite having other options to ride.
Two runners who didn’t run in that maiden on 7 March are interesting. Hallie's Gal (8) goes for the same connections who won that race. Like her, she is a first time starter. She has worked like she has ability and her trainer has a fine record with newcomers. Legion Heiress (11) has had the benefit of an outing. Although ultimately well beaten on debut, she may be a lot better than run suggests. She faced a stiff task against a talented maiden and had to be checked around the turn. She’s worked well since and may be different proposition second time at the races.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
