Flat horse racing

Unusually for the time of year, all-weather fixtures from Newcastle and Southwell hold the numerical advantage over the sole National Hunt fixture from Market Rasen on Tuesday.

So, my horse racing tips for the day includes two on the level and just one over obstacles.

Horse Racing Tips - Tuesday, March 4

  • 15:22 Newcastle - William Dewhirst @ 10/3
  • 15:35 Market Rasen - Hold Up La Colmine @ 6/4
  • 19:00 Southwell - True Promise @ 3/1

15:22 Newcastle - William Dewhirst @ 10/3

Ben Haslam’s WILLIAM DEWHIRST has been in the form of his life on the all-weather since the autumn and particularly enjoys it over this course and distance, winning at Newcastle six times and five times over 7f.

The most recent of those came last time out and he got his revenge on Barnaby, who got the better of him on his penultimate start. This son of Sioux Nation scored by a neck and carries a 5lb penalty as a result. He might need to find a little more in order to follow up but his profile suggests that’s a distinct possibility.

Paul Mulrennan takes the ride once again and he’s had a particularly good year at Newcastle, riding 19 winners at a strike-rate of 25 per cent. The experienced jockey also has two winners from five rides in the last fortnight, which bodes well here.

Haslam has had two winners from just nine runners in the last fortnight, one of which was William Dewhirst. Horses with this sort of profile are usually worth keeping on side until their limitations are exposed and it would be dangerous to rule out further success.

15:35 Market Rasen - Hold Up La Colmine @ 6/4

Watch out for HOLD UP LA COLMINE at Market Rasen as Phillip Hobbs & Johnson White’s eight-year-old was a solid novice hurdler two seasons ago. This £65,000 purchase won the second of his two starts in Irish points and the runner-up has since won a bumper under rules.

His eight-length fifth at Hexham in December was a fair effort, on the grounds that it was his first start for 629 days. The gelding’s sole success came off a 2lb higher mark in a handicap hurdle at Sedgefield in March and he gamely held off the challenge of the now 125-rated chaser Hashtag Boum.

Third in a better race at Windsor last time, he may well have finished closer if not for being distracted by a loose horse. Connections seem to have found him a good opportunity and the best is probably yet to come over fences.

19:00 Southwell - True Promise @ 3/1

Four-year-old TRUE PROMISE has a few less miles in the legs than many of his rivals at Southwell and his best form suggests he’s on a very winnable mark at the moment. He bumped into an in-form rival when runner-up at Chelmsford last time and a similar effort could be enough.

Adaptable with regards to trip, he has won over 5f and 6f and scored here over the latter trip off a 2lb lower mark in October. Kevin Ryan’s chestnut won over 5f at Newcastle in November and should be going close off a 1lb lower mark here.

19:00 Southwell - Winner True Promise
