Lucky 15 Tips: Charlie’s our darling at Ludlow

Thursday already, dear reader. Tempus fugit, and all that rhubarb. For our Lucky 15 tips let's head to lovely Ludlow, and a grand afternoon of National Hunt action.

15:45 - Gaye Legacy @ 3/1

Staying mares contest a decent Class 3 handicap hurdle.

The selection is Gaye Legacy, a seven-year-old by Flemensfirth who has two wins all-told from 12 runs over timber. She returned from a 311-day break at Sandown at the beginning of February and weakened out of contention late, on heavy ground.

She'll surely strip fitter for this and off a mark of 116 she's only 4lb higher than when scoring gamely at Newbury just over 12 months ago. That reappearance spin was a G3 worth £56k to the winner and to say this is a tad more straightforward would be something of an understatement.

Ben Poste rides for Tom Symonds - and the pair have struck gold in the last couple of weeks so the yard's hopefully in reasonable order.

16:20 - Heard That @ 2/1

Rising star Olly Murphy trains, and Kevin Brogan has the riding assignment.

Heard That is a six-year-old gelding in a rich vein of form just now, with a win and a close second in his two 2025 outings. Regular Murphy collaborator Sean Bowen was in the plate on both occasions, but he's got some good chances elsewhere (Taunton) on Thursday.

This represents a slight rise (Class 3) but with the horse in such fine fettle a career-high mark of 115 might not be enough to stop him. Nice racing weight of 10st 13lb, competitive heat, every chance.

16:53 - Charming Getaway @ 6/1

Routine Class 5 handicap hurdle with some good yards in opposition.

I'm siding with Mel Rowley's Charming Getaway, who looked last time to be very close to opening his account, after 10 runs under rules. 34 days ago at Donny he was second off 76 and cruelly runs off 81 today - but it was a big display in terms of his form over the last couple of years.

Charlie Deutsch was on board last time and retains the mount. He's outstanding, pocketing lots of big prizes for Venetia Williams this term, and again the racing weight is eye-catching - 10st 9lb. Tremendous chance in my book.

17:23 - Port Or Starboard @ 7/2

Conditional jocks line up for a 2m, Class 5 handicap hurdle.

Ellis Collier is able to claim 3lb which will certainly help, and the horse comes here fresh from a good second in the grade at Uttoxeter on New Year's Eve. Port Or Starboard was arguably a little unfortunate because the winner that day, Eaton Anne, came from another postcode late on to take the spoils under a vintage Sean Bowen drive and has since absolutely hosed up at Lingfield by 22l!

Deserved compensation potentially awaits on Thursday afternoon for Caerphilly handler Bernard Llewellyn, and his eight-year-old gelding.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!
