Tampa Bay Downs Race 4 (19:15) - No6 Well Connected
No2 Money Song has run two big races since his comeback. In both starts, he has been placed in similar races to this one. In the first, he had No8 Astronaut Oscar just behind him. He and his old rival are players but there are others in less sharp form that may be capable of stepping up on recent efforts.
No7 Ebben may be all the better for his comeback. He goes for a trainer winning at a super rate. Off his form at Monmouth in the summer that can easily win this. No9 Tripulante is another who may have been ring rusty on his return. He was competitive in much better races in his last spell at Turf Paradise.
The comeback run of No6 Well Connected was much better than his beaten lengths suggests. He ran well for a long way in a higher priced and open claimer when apprentice ridden. He's now reunited by veteran jockey Vernon Bush who was aboard him in his last six victories. He may be worth a small play at decent odds. Maybe also use him in forecasts with No7 Ebben and No9 Tripulante.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Gulfstream Park Race 5 (19:58) – No7 Competitive Saint
No4 Solomons Gold is the standard setter at this level. He's won back to back starts for today's claiming price. In both races, he had No5 Gone Nuts back in third. If a trainer change since his last victory doesn't see him regress, he's likely to go very well again. Like him, No9 Bird Wildcat is on a hat-trick. He too has been winning at this level. He's not short of speed, so the cut back to six furlongs may not be an issue.
No1 Woke Up Quick is aggressively spotted after winning a $12,500 claimer for two time career winners. He's been freshened up and looks the one No7 Competitive Saint and the rest have to catch. He's been running with credit in higher priced claimers on The Tapeta. The eight-year-old has run well on the dirt in the past. His trainer Peter Walder has a good record when he makes this surface switch. He looks a solid place chance at least.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Turf Paradise Race 5 (21:59) – No2 Defense Wins
A wide open race. Some of these look interesting, dropping in class. No9 Sky Cloud won back to back claimers sprinting here before being well beaten in a starter over a mile. This is a far more winnable spot. Like him, No6 Nice Guy Eddie gets class relief. He's been overmatched in two far better races than this one at this meet. He has upside with a top jockey now taking the ride.
No7 Saint Pio was rewarded with some fine efforts when out finishing a slightly cheaper field of claimers in December. He's one for the shortlist along with No1 Silver Dash and No10 Bare Back Jack. The rail drawn runner hasn't raced since September but has the back form to win this. No10 Bare Back Jack represents a dangerous trainer. He had a troubled trip last time.
No2 Defense Wins may be worth siding with. He was a winner in Northern California in November. The eight-year-old was far from disgraced in a swiftly run, higher priced claimer on his local debut. If he breaks on terms, he may be on or close to less than frenetic early fractions. His trainer snapped a losing streak here last week. That horse as ridden as the selection is by Kevin Krigger.
