Exeter races scaled

Two National Hunt meetings in Britain as well as Navan in Ireland make up the action on Sunday afternoon. There’s competitive jumps action in the afternoon from both Chepstow and Exeter in Britain, as well as two Grade 2s and some fiercely competitive handicaps from across the Irish Sea.

Amongst my Sunday Horse Racing Tips is a lightly-raced horse from Olly Murphy’s yard whose trainer has always expected to be high class.

Horse Racing Tips - Sunday, February 9

  • 14:30 Exeter - Fingle Bridge @ 8/1
  • 15:00 Exeter - Gustavian @ 4/1
  • 15:20 Chepstow - The Midwife @ 7/2

14:30 Exeter - Fingle Bridge @ 8/1

A cracking novice hurdle that should throw up plenty of future winners, but at the prices Olly Murphy’s lightly raced seven-year-old looks the one to be on.

There is plenty of potential on show in this race, with the six runners already the winners of 19 races between them, but despite being the oldest of the field, Fingle Bridge brings a lot of promise after only four starts.

This race was nominated as his target immediately after his decisive win at Market Rasen last time, with a right-handed track and soft ground a prerequisite for him to show his best.

He beat a talented rival that day and, always highly regarded by his trainer, he can take this en route to better things.

15:00 Exeter - Gustavian @ 4/1

A tremendous veterans’ chase with the dead eight making it great for each-way punters, and with 10-year-olds always the first port of call in these contests, trust Anthony Honeyball’s Gustavian to notch his first win for almost two years.

That contest was over course-and-distance off a 6lb higher mark, and is one of two course victories to his name, while he’s also been second, third and fourth in only six runs here.

He is aiming to gain quick compensation for an early fall in an all-aged handicap last week at Sandown, while the fact he was sent off at 9/2 for that contest indicates that he is considered to be in good form.

Ten-year-olds have a tremendous record in this race, winning all bar one of the seven runnings, and although Honeyball has another contender of that vintage in Credo, Sam Twiston-Davies prefers this one and punters should take note.

15:20 Chepstow - The Midwife @ 7/2

Unlucky to bump into a typical Venetia Williams improver on his chasing debut last time, Grace Harris’ point-to-point winner can make amends today in a similar contest.

A winner off 2lb higher in his first handicap hurdle around 12 months ago, the selection has failed to get on the scoresheet since, despite running a couple of good races late last year.

His first outing over the bigger obstacles came over this course and distance a couple of weeks ago when fences seemed to have improved him a little and he achieved his best RPR of the season.

The winner looked a cut above the opposition that day when notching his second win in succession, but The Midwife was a solid second and there doesn’t look to be anything with that one’s capacity in this field.

15:20 Chepstow - Winner The Midwife
