Nap of the day

We're heading up to Gosforth Park, Newcastle for our Nap Of The Day (Tuesday's racing, February 4). An all-weather meeting on the Tapeta that gets going at 16:30, and my interest is piqued by a fascinating maiden featuring some promising types at 18:30.

No heroic stakes are envisaged, but the selection still appeals as the most likely winner in my book. A nice gentle start to the week - and if you're playing this or any other, good luck and have fun!

18:30 Newcastle - Orangesandlemons @ 3/1

Six are scheduled to face the starter - four fillies, a colt, and a gelding. Five are three years of age, and one is four. Who is about to break their duck? And as my fingers are hitting the keys, the four-year-old filly is sadly declared a non-runner. It's live, folks.

Not a great deal of experience between them, but there are several placed finishes among the outings that have taken place. My selection is a filly by Mayson out of a Cityscape mare trained on Middleham Moor by Ed Bethell, and Saffie Osborne has the riding assignment.

Orangesandlemons has had three career spins so far - two similar, backend juvenile contests both of which were here at Newcastle, and having turned three on January 1, a Wolverhampton maiden engagement 29 days ago.

They were all over 7f, and she gets to stretch out over a mile here. On the evidence of those three excellent runs, finishing second in each of them (never beaten further than 1.75l), the step up in trip shouldn't be an issue.

Her sire was a top-drawer five and six furlong champion, but there's a useful stamina influence on the dam's side, as Cityscape, quite apart from a raft of fine victories, was a creditable second to the mighty Canford Cliffs at Royal Ascot (1m), and that winner was thought by many good judges capable of running Frankel close in the Sussex over the same trip at Goodwood.

The booking of Saffie is another plus for me. She's outstanding, and has been posting some very solid numbers for the last couple of years. It's her only booked mount on the card too, which I see as most encouraging.

The horse has run well on this course twice, she's consistent, and though the trainer hasn't had a recent winner he's saddled a third and two seconds from his last six runners. Lovely little heat to savour, two or three huge dangers, but I'm not for swapping.
