Lidosa

Unbeaten middleweight prospect George Liddard faces the battle-tested Derrick Osaze this Friday, January 31. The bout takes place at the Indigo at the O2 in Greenwich. DAZN will screen the card live on their platform.

Here are my Liddard vs Osaze predictions ahead of a fight that kicks off the weekend.

Liddard vs Osaze Betting Tips

  • Liddard on points @ 21/10
  • Fight to go the distance - Yes @ 6/4

George Liddard vs Derrick Osaze Odds

Osaze is an 11/2 underdog, not helped by a crushing KO defeat last time out. Liddard is a big favourite at 1/10 while you can back the draw at 20/1.

Fight Preview

Britain has a history of producing great middleweights. Randolph Turpin, Alan Minter, Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn, Darren Barker and Billy Joe Saunders all hailed from these shores and went on to claim world championships in the division.

A hefty legacy, to be sure. It is too early to tell if 10-0 Liddard will walk the same path, but that appears to be the long-term idea. The Billericay boy is just 22 years of age and is already headlining a building that holds over 2000 fans. Matchroom definitely see a future for this kid.

Looking to rewrite that future is Osaze. 13-2 but matched tough along the way, ‘The Punching Preacher’ has experience against some top names. Osaze has beaten Joel Julio, a former world title challenger who serves largely as a journeyman these days.

His two losses came in fine company. Osaze was outpointed by Tyler Denny back in 2021, in a bout staged in a Sheffield car park due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After rebounding with wins over journeyman opponents, Osaze secured a fight with Denzel Bentley. Disaster would strike as he suffered a thunderous one-punch KO defeat in the second round.

Bentley has been all the way to the top, having boxed for the WBO world title in the past. Catching a peach of a punch from a competitor like that us nothing to be ashamed of. But, having lost against the two best fighters he has ever met, Osaze is staring gatekeeper status in the face.

A loss against Liddard is unthinkable. Losing to European champions and world title challengers is one thing. But if Osaze gets beaten by a 10-0 prospect, his career will head in another direction entirely. ‘The Punching Preacher’ can kiss title level goodbye unless he is victorious on Friday night.

George Liddard vs Derrick Osaze - Method Of Victory Liddard on Points

Odds correct at time of publishing.

Liddard’s prognosis isn’t quite as all-or-nothing. But these days it only really takes one loss to end your days as a hot prospect. Once the record is blemished, you become something else. A solid hand. A decent opponent. At best, a domestic-level operator. It is a reductive view, but one that sadly persists in the modern sport.

But Liddard can stifle such talk on Friday night. The Essex lad has impressed across his 10 fights. A fifth-round stoppage of fellow prospect George Davey put him on the radars of many observers.

Liddard has been out once since, a spectacular first-round knockout of experienced Italian Omar Nguale Ilunga. Nobody had stopped the veteran in 33 previous fights and the Brit became only the third man to ever beat him. Ilunga was no world-beater, but he was a seasoned and well-travelled campaigner. To score a resounding win like that over such an opponent just 10 fights in, at the age of just 22, is impressive.

Now Liddard looks to take another giant leap forward. This appointment with Osaze is the toughest fight of his career so far. A win could unlock untold opportunities. A loss would send Liddard back to the drawing board. These sort of all-or-nothing gambles are often what this compellingly-zany sport is all about.

George Liddard vs Derrick Osaze Prediction

I think this is Liddard’s time. There is a reason Matchroom is showcasing the youngster with his very own card at the Indigo. There is a belief in this kid and I think there is a good reason for that belief.

As good as I think Liddard is, I don’t think he punches like Denzel Bentley. For that reason, I’m going for Liddard to take a comfortable points nod at 21/10.
