Ayr racecourse

National Hunt racing dominates the action on Tuesday, with three of the day’s four fixtures across Britain and Ireland taking place over the obstacles. Down Royal gets us started, before the afternoon action continues at Ayr and Leicester. Newcastle’s all-weather meeting provides the evening entertainment.

I have three horse racing tips to follow on the day, including one for Lucinda Russell that can return to winning ways now dropped in grade.

Horse Racing Tips - Tuesday, January 21

  • 15:05 Ayr - El Elefante @ 5/2
  • 15:25 Leicester - Snapius @ 11/2
  • 15:55 Leicester - Westerninthepark @ 11/8

15:05 Ayr - El Elefante @ 5/2

EL ELEFANTE looked like a smart prospect immediately for Lucinda Russell as she won both of her bumper starts in the spring of 2023. The second of those was particularly impressive, as the stablemate she beat by six lengths won a race over hurdles next time.

She absolutely bolted up on her first start over hurdles the following autumn and once Derek Fox shook her up two out, she put the race to bed very quickly. The official winning margin was 24 lengths and she wasn’t disgraced when fifth in a much better race at Cheltenham after that.

Russell’s mare made a winning start to her career over fences at Worcester in October and she scored by seven lengths whilst being eased towards the finish. Whilst the form is a bit of a mixed bag, the third did go on to win her next start.

Her third behind Terresita in a Listed event at Carlisle was decent enough but she was very below-par at Warwick recently. The handicapper has since dropped her 2lb and winning a handicap off 128 should be very achievable for her.

15:05 Ayr - Winner El Elefante

15:25 Leicester - Snapius @ 11/2

Laura Morgan’s lightly raced and progressive runner Achille Des Rocs is one to watch and should be winning more races in the future but James Owen’s SNAPIUS could be the one to side with on this occasion.

He managed to win a maiden hurdle in Ireland for previous connections and that race did produce several subsequent winners. Joining his new yard in the summer, his four runs on the Flat were very underwhelming but he has progressed with each run over hurdles.

The son of Buratino returned to winning ways with a good win in Class 5 company at Lingfield and a 5lb rise should be manageable on that evidence. Owen is good at getting this type of horse to improve and Alex Chadwick takes 5lb off once again.

15:25 Leicester - Winner Snapius

15:55 Leicester - Westerninthepark @ 11/8

Look out for Olly Murphy’s runner WESTERNINTHEPARK here, as a return to winning ways could well be on the cards. A fair second in a better race at Cheltenham on his penultimate start, the fifth has subsequently boosted the form by winning since.

He was an impressive winner on heavy ground at Stratford before that and he was always in control, going on to score by 14 lengths. Murphy’s seven-year-old was a little disappointing at Aintree on Boxing Day but that was a very competitive open handicap.

This task looks considerably easier and whilst Venetia Williams’ Hunter Legend is well set to provide a strong challenge, Sean Bowen’s mount is expected to come out on top.

15:55 Leicester - Winner Westerninthepark
