The battle for promotion from the EFL Championship continues on Friday evening (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event) when Burnley play host to Sunderland at Turf Moor.

It was the Black Cats who managed to edge a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light when these two sides met back in August, but this time there could be even less to choose from between two evenly-matched sides. Read below for my Football Bet of the Day for Friday, January 17.

Football Odds

There was very little to separate these teams at the Stadium of Light, in a game in which Romain Mundle’s 26th-minute goal proved to be the difference.

Sunderland’s Dan Neil was sent off in the 85th minute of that encounter for a second yellow card offence, but Burnley just couldn’t find a late equaliser up in the North East.

The Clarets currently find themselves in second place in the Championship standings, with just one point between themselves and frontrunners Leeds United.

And there might well be some frustration among Burnley supporters that their side don’t have some breathing space between themselves and Daniel Farke’s Leeds.

While Scott Parker’s side are undefeated at Turf Moor this season, they have been held to six draws in 12 home games this term.

Drawing three of their last four home matches, the Clarets have been having to work hard on the road to make up for the points that have been dropping at Turf Moor.

The Black Cats will be fully aware of Burnley’s record on their own patch and will be going all out to frustrate the hosts on Friday night.

The last meeting between these sides at Turf Moor in the Championship was in March 2023, with the two teams playing out a goalless draw in Lancashire.

A similar result might well be on the cards here, with another goalless draw on Friday available at 7/1.

Burnley vs Sunderland Odds

However, the more conservative approach is to go with the straight draw, considering Burnley have drawn half of their 12 home games in the league this season.

Both teams have threats in the final third which works against backing the 0-0 correct score in this one.

Midfielder Josh Brownhill is currently the top goalscorer for Burnley in the Championship this season, with the 29-year-old finding the back of the net nine times.

Fellow midfielder Zian Flemming has been moved further forward by Parker and he too has been contributing goals, with four in the league this term.

Wilson Isidor is Sunderland’s top goalscorer with eight in the Championship, while the Black Cats have also been scoring plenty of goals from midfield, with Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg bagging four goals each.

A cagey encounter is expected in this one and perhaps both teams would be content to take a draw away from this one and move on.
